We were lucky to catch up with Johnny Wilson III recently and have shared our conversation below.
Johnny , appreciate you joining us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
If I were starting over, I would change my spending habits. I would want to do better with saving my money instead of splurging thru it. I had/have this habit of if I see something I want I need to get it right now. When in reality most of the times things can wait for another better opportunity. How I would get to where I am today faster would be by opening my mouth and actually going out to get the work. I have a bad habit of feeling scared to do certain things because I’m worried about what someone think, or just thinking someone wouldn’t book me because they don’t think I’m worth my price or because I think someone else’s work is better than mine and they go book with someone else. Which has happened to me many of times, but I always try to keep in mind that there are people out there that are willing to pay whatever they’re rate is. Some of my closest friends or just friends I talk to won’t book me for a shoot and I’ve seen them go to someone else. It happens but you just gotta use that as fuel to better yourself and get better at your craft.

Johnny , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ll start with how I got my name. When I was 13-14, I saw a movie called “Dracula Untold. It was a pretty good movie and I loved it. Later on in freshman/sophomore year in high school, I was in a program at my school for sound engineering, I wanted to be a music producer. But sadly after my sophomore year my school cut that class and I was forced to go into television production. There, I didn’t know what I was doing, but I grabbed a camera and just started shooting. From there (in that new class), we had projects like PSA’s, commercials, music videos, etc. My classmates used to tell me all the time, that I’m good with the camera. After high school, I got connected with Flo Rida’s Strong Arm Athletics @ IMG Studios and I started shooting with the FYFL and Shooting Videos for the Miami Carol City High school football team. After that I decided to take photography a little more seriously. From there, I went to work at warehouse for a little bit, then I got a job at SpareZ Bowling Center. Some bookings and gigs started coming up so fast I couldn’t really keep up with the job so I ended up making one of the best decisions of my life and Quit my 9-5 to do what I love full time. I then discovered one of the greatest photography studios, KeyFootage Studios. When I came here, and started working here I’ve gotten so much better because I’m around nothing but awesome photographers and you learn different things from different people which is amazing. Then I got connected with Publicist Tre Neal that really helped me do more things such as covering major events like Kodak Black Day, 103.5 People Matter Fest, Overtown Music Fest , Miami Fashion Week and much more. I also got the opportunity to work with artist like Kodak Black, Dusty Locane, French Montana, Jada Kingdom, MoneyBagg Yo, Tory Lanez. And everything else that has happened after was just a great process by the grace of god. And I know this is where I need to start to do what I want to do as a career which is in the Film Industry. But it’s still along way to go and I can’t wait to see what happens next!!!!

How did you build your audience on social media?
Just a short story about how I built my audience. For a while since I started. I learned that I tend to do what trending/what everyone likes. Which is cool because sometimes you have to do what your audience likes. But as time passed, I learned that People Will love what you love to do. As long as your having fun, being creative as possible, and happy with what your doing, That’s all that matters. My advice to those would be, DO WHAT YOU LOVE. Never let anyone bring you down or tell you what to do about the way you wanna showcase your brand.

Have you ever had to pivot?
