We recently connected with Johnay Douglass and have shared our conversation below.
Johnay, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Let’s be honest life is a risk. Every day that you get up and get in your car you’re taking a risk of an unknown. That is the same mentality that you have to have when you become an entrepreneur. Taking a risk is a part of everyday life. More importantly, it’s about making sure your risk has a greater reward. For me that was launching my scrub business, it was starting my trucking company, going back to school, and as of late obtaining my massage therapy certifications. All those things have risk attached to them because they are services that need people to buy and or use them. When you operate with businesses that are based you are already at what I will call a sweet spot. You have to be up on your customer service skills, you have to be likable, and you also have to be marketable. You have to be in the proper position to solve and give them relief for whatever pain point your business is said to offer. For me having the ability to know who my audience is find their pain point create a campaign full of solutions surrounding that concern and ensure I have their best interests at heart is the ultimate risk because either they’re going to like it or they’re not

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Jonay Wells Douglas I am a mother, a daughter, a wife, a sister, a cousin and so much more. I would like to consider myself a serial entrepreneur. I have scaled and maintained multiple businesses that have reached great revenue and success. I began my entrepreneurial journey with my cleaning business. That took off faster than I anticipated. I then was able to create an amazing experience with scrubs for my tall girls and we are size-inclusive. I partnered with my husband to enter into the truck industry, and I went back to school to get my massage therapy certifications. As you can tell every business I operated and or was affiliated with was a consumer base business. I have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people that I encounter. My goal is to leave a memorable mark with my customer service and my product that will guarantee return clients. The most pivotal part of my journey was during covid where we as a country saw the devastation of what a single event could do to millions of people. I was blessed to have been able to scale in such a tough economy that allowed me to open doors for my friends and family. Most importantly it allowed me the ability to navigate in tough circumstances. The strength I developed and the relationships I built during the pandemic have fostered many of the contracts I have to date. As of late, I have been deeply interested in the mechanics of the body. How physical touch can cause such emotional and physical relief and encompass the whole body experiences is important to me now. I want people to take away from my experiences that anything is possible no matter your age. You are never too young or too old to step out on faith and create the life you deserve. Being around positive and successful women such as my mother and grandmother only motivated me more to create those experiences for my daughters.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson I had to learn was not everybody will backstab you. I have encountered a person I met in my early teenage years who planted a seed and allowed me to grow up naturally. She instilled in me some of the structures and the fundamentals I use daily in my business and my personal life. Not only did she encourage me as a young lady but unintentionally planted the seeds to foster my my career going forward. Everything she taught me in my teenage years propelled me to be the entrepreneur that I am to date. Even so much so that anytime I had a question or concern, needed someone to vent to about business or personal life; she is always there without consequence. Even more so she does not charge me to implement the changes in my business that she feels will take me to the next level. As quiet as it’s kept she is a motivational factor for my life. She always is a call away. She taught me how to put prayer before panicking and always be ready to pivot.

Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
Right now we are living in the best opportunity to market and make money. We have a free platform to scale your business at any and every turn throughout the day. If you have a cell phone, a tablet, or any electronic device you should be making memorable and favorable content for your business. My favorite marketing sales or story is organic content and marketing. It’s very hard to capture a scripted persona that will translate well into conversion and revenue. Most of my conversion comes from organic interactions with my clients and viewers on social media and in person. People are naturally drawn to organic energy. Even if they suspect you are faking it or just trying to get their money they will never trust you or purchase your product. I lead with what I do daily. For those who follow me on social media know I am not a gatekeeper! I don’t hold back information that can help someone get to the next level. Now don’t get me wrong sometimes there are things you have to pay for in life, and I am in the works of creating a series of ebooks that will give very specific information on specific topics that will help entrepreneurs navigate these social media marketing streets. Also, some of the best content are things that are controversial. When you have two conflicting passionate sides interacting with each other on your post it allows your engagement and your views to be more prominent for other people to come on and one view their conversations and your content.
In a time where everybody has a product to sell, you have to be able to know your audience know their pain point or their problem, and provide them a viable resolution. For example one of my businesses is scrubs. I researched that tall girls and size-inclusive girls have a hard time finding quality products. My solution was to find manufacturers that provide quality products for the length and width of the clients that I’m serving. I then showcase those solutions in real life. They can see someone like them in my product which drives home the notion that someone is listening and cares. I have not created an emotional connection with my audiences by fulfilling a need they had.
