Joey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?

In 2003, I had a snowboarding accident and injured my spine and separated my shoulder. The injury created a ripple effect of health problems that continued to get worse over time. I was suffering from chronic pain, stress, and having problems sleeping. For years, I used pharmaceutical drugs but they seemed to make matters worse. It felt like I was just “kicking the can down the road”. Then in 2017, while working at Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor, the pain got so bad that I reached a breaking point. I had enough of being in pain and dealing and the stress that came with it. I could not continue working in that environment, so at that moment I decided to put my health first and trade in my career to seek holistic healing.

I figured the best way to start my journey to healing was to travel solo. Nature was calling me, so I decided to fulfill a long time goal of mine which was to travel throughout Central and South America. I booked one way tickets everywhere I went and stayed as long as I desired. I travelled to Mexico and toured around the Yucatan visiting the ancient ruins, tombs, and pyramids. I then travelled down the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua and Costa Rica and volunteered at different retreats and worked as a surf instructor in exchange for food and a place to stay. The last destination on my journey was Peru. My first stop was Cusco where I participated in a plant based medicine retreat with local shamans. After the retreat, I took a train ride up to Machu Picchu and climbed to the summit.

Time away from the system and being in nature helped change my perspective and values on life. I no longer had a desire to work in the financial industry. Rather, I wanted to be involved in something more rewarding and fulfilling. Thankfully, my prayers would be answered shortly after returning back home. After being home for a few weeks, a friend asked me if I ever tried CBD. I told her I had not, but that I heard good things about it. She offered me CBD gummies and I accepted. Minutes after eating one, I felt a gentle and natural sense of calmness and clarity. I then felt less tense and my pain started to dissipate. That night, I was able to sleep throughout the night without waking. I was so impressed with the results that I began studying about cannabis. I spent a countless amount of hours reading and watching films on how to produce high quality cannabis products. I also learned that all animals, humans and pets have an endocannabinoid system (endo = inside) that naturally creates cannabinoids to establish homeostasis (balance). My appreciation for what I experienced from taking CBD and learning about cannabis motivated me to want to share it with others.

Joey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Sure… My name is Joey Jennings and in 2017, I got fed up with being in pain and not getting the help that I needed from pharmaceutical drugs. I was motivated to join the cannabis industry after personally discovering the benefits of CBD. As someone whose health depends on CBD, my objective is to have the highest quality cannabis products available. I created my own brand of CBD products after realizing the lack of transparency and education in the industry, and also the availability of consistent high quality cannabis products.

As someone whose health depends on using cannabis, my objective is to use the highest quality products available. Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?

Funding Mother Holistic was very challenging. Unfortunately, the FDA has not approved CBD as a supplement even though the United States has a medicinal patent on all cannabinoids. Being that CBD is not yet approved by the FDA makes it very difficult to receive funding and merchant services from financial organizations. To fund the business, I had to liquidate my 401k and put myself into credit card debt. It’s been challenging but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I love what I do and I appreciate every day that I stay in business.
