We recently connected with Joel NR Powell and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joel NR Powell, thanks for joining us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
As a creative, I’ve constantly been misunderstood as being anti-job. Due to my passion towards entrepreneurship, I remember when I was in high school and I was telling one of my teachers about my dreams and ambitions and being immediately told that pursuing a job would be a better bet because it’s very hard to make it in the entertainment business. From a young age, I had to develop tough skin because people will always judge what they don’t understand and what they are not willing to learn about. Everyone has the right to pursue what makes them happy in order to not just make a living but to make a difference in this world. I will tell anyone who’s stepping outside the norm and dares to be different employment wise to stand up for themselves and never allow someone to place their fears on you. Never allow someone to belittle your ideas and vision and, most of all, never allow anyone to make you feel you’re not worthy of success.

Joel NR Powell, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My passion is empowering the world through books, film, music and being creative. I’m a goal-driven person that loves the arts & entertainment business with all my heart. I discovered that in order to be successful you have to be solutions-driven. Its so easy to complain, its so easy to talk and its so easy to give up. It’s those that are truly willing to endure and find ways for their message to be heard that are the ones that will stand the test of time. I am proud of the fact I’ve been running a successful brand, NR Entertainment Inc, and through my company I’ve been able to release several highly successful projects. A best selling & award winning book, a best selling film, a debut EP/album that was archived by Billboard music. As well as, DJed for several top organizations such as Cricket Wireless, T-Mobile, & Subway. I’ve served as keynote speaker for several high-profiled organizations, such as The University of Toronto, George Brown College, The Boys & Girls Club of Atlanta. In 2022 I released 2 EP projects where I wrote, performed, produced, mixed, mastered & cover designed both projects: NR City EP & Visions In My Eyes EP. My main goal is before you can ask others for help you first have to help yourself.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
As much as social media has become a powerful tool to generate buzz, recognition and creativeness. It still doesn’t take the place of someone’s talent. People in powerful positions within the entertainment business have to remind themselves that dedication, drive, perseverance, passion, patience and most of all, timing will always stand the test of time, even beyond social media. We as a creative culture have to open our minds up more in order to truly believe in someone’s talent. All the glitz and glamour that can come after. Its being able to see the diamonds in the rough is where you know you truly found a gem. On a person-to-person basis, society can embrace the creative community by not low-balling us and belittling our worth based on notions that you don’t understand. I’ve had moments where people have said to me “Oh you’re just a DJ, your charging too much” and I’ve had to respond by breaking down not only the cost of replacing my equipment but also the time and energy I’ve put into making myself successful. Society needs to treat creatives with the same respect they show lawyers, doctors, electricians, plumbers etc. We all have a service to provide and we all deserve to be paid our worth.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
Living my life doing what I love and being able to connect with the world. It’s a dream come true and I still haven’t reached the ultimate level yet. My mission is to be the best creative entrepreneur the world has ever seen. It’s destiny and I know its happening daily.
