We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joel Laflamme. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joel below.
Alright, Joel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I’ve created a way of showcasing a screenplay in a visual performance based medium that doesn’t require large production budgets.
By using zoom I’ve been able to create hybrid productions to showcase not only the writing but also the performers.
It’s been a tremendous experience bringing stories to life in a new and vibrant way.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I grew up a massive fan of film. I always wanted to be involved in the industry in someway shape or form. As I grew up, I found my skills pushing me in the direction of storytelling. I was lucky enough to attend the Sundance film Festival at an early age. There I was able to meet heroes of TV and film. From that moment on, I’ve remained steadfast in my goals of becoming a screenwriter and eventually a Director. I now sit with 25 completed screenplays across all genres and I feel my time has come for true artistic expression in this industry.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I really learned to get over criticism. Don’t get me wrong. Criticism can be very constructive, but it can also destroy creativity so you have to be able to recognize productive and subjective criticism. It’s important to understand what’s best for the story, but not necessarily what’s best for the individual reader. You can’t make everyone happy but you can do your best to tell your story.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
If I have a single goal, it’s to entertain. There is no greater feeling and seeing somebody positively respond to my material. I will take that joy over any other sensation in the world. Whether it’s making people laugh, cry, or scaring the hell out of them it’s emotional reaction that I seek.
