We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joe Bezotte a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Joe, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
I have been training several fortune 500 company Executive Protection Teams for about 10 years now. upon having professional discussions about this type of training in the corporate world, I have come to find out the hardest part of it is often convincing the company it is needed at all.
I find this very confusing due to the fact the CEO’s, CFO’s and others know there are real threats to them, their families so they have these people nearby, but don’t see the need to have them continually trained? If anything I would believe they would encourage regular quality training so they can perform their duties to their utmost abilities and keep them safe. Ask most any lawyer and they will tell you the MORE quality training a team receives, the LOWER the liability. The LESS quality training a team receives the HIGHER the liability. It may seem obvious, but if a team is properly trained they will have a more honed skillset to respond to an emergency in an effective manner. The less it is trained the more chaos ensues and the less effectively the situation will be handled.
We have been providing training in all areas of Executive and Close Protection for over a decade. Our training is provided by only the best instructors in the country. Our Close Protection Courses are all approved through the State of MN and our training, knowledge and experience in the field are second to none.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a recently retired Senior Federal Air Marshal. I retired with 32 years of experience and at least 15 of those years spent in a training capacity. I learned early on in my military career that I enjoyed being part of a training department and helping people be the best they could possibly be at whatever they were pursuing. I took that passion on to the Federal Bureau of Prisons where I trained Special Operations Response Teams and other in various areas. After 9/11 I was hired by the Federal Air Marshal Service to perform counterterrorism duties. I was quickly moved into the training department where I had the privilege of serving as a Defensive Tactics Instructor, Tactical Information Instructor, Situational Awareness and Behavioral Recognition Instructor, Use of Force Instructor, Legal and Investigative Instructor, Firearms Instructor and more.
I have put all of my experience, training and knowledge into this company with the goal of preparing people for, arguably, the worst situation they will ever encounter.
We train average citizens in multiple areas of personal defense. We offer training in firearms, defensive tactics, de-escalation, behavior recognition and much more!
We train many Worship Security Teams in various ways to keep their followers and places of worship safe. this includes many various methods such as early detection, situational awareness, scenario based training, reading behavioral indicators, defensive tactics, firearms and more. this training is specifically designed and tailored for Worship Security Teams.
We train many Executive Protection Teams for fortune 500 companies, medium size companies and even individuals.

One of the courses we have had great success and great feedback with is our Pistol Level I/Permit To Carry course. We have had many people come to our course after having been through another course but left feeling unprepared. After completing our 6hr course, EVERYONE who has attended has expressed feeling confident and having much more clarity about the what, how, where and when of carrying a concealed firearm. Our numerous, and generous google reviews attest to this.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
To date, my best source for new clients has been Facebook. I try to post regularly about our courses both past and present and highlight some of the people in them. Approximately once a month I will create a Facebook ad. this have been fairly productive as well. Another great way I have obtained clients is simply word of mouth. For this reason it is imperative you put your best foot forward for every client.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe focusing on the client is imperative. When meeting with a client is is very important to not be business focused but rather inquisitive about the client. Try to understand the needs and the frustration of the client. This is especially important upon the first few meetings.
