Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joanna Hiatt Kim. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Joanna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
I’ve always loved photography. The camera can do things that our eyes can’t — for example, freeze time to show forever what was a fleeting moment, and stack light to see things that our eyes can’t. I took classes in high school and was a photo editor for my college newspaper, but was unsure where to go from there and lost it for a bit. But as my kids started to grow up, I contemplated getting back to it. It took me a while to figure out how, but I settled on landscape photography. I’m an introvert and enjoy the peace and solitude that is roaming around the outside by yourself. For better or worse, it was the pandemic that really got the ball rolling. I suddenly had a much, much more flexible schedule and it was so much easier to find time to shoot. From there, I’ve tried to take it one step at a time…connecting with the community, learning from others, getting a print shop set up, etc.

Joanna, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a landscape and travel photographer. My favorite shots are those that manipulate time in some sort of manner. I love long exposures and composite photographs, for example, that show locations in ways that you can’t see with your actual eyes.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I really do enjoy creating art for my own sake. When I take a photograph that speaks to me personally, it is the best feeling. That said, choosing art for your walls is so deeply personal and the idea that clients choose my photographs to hang on the wall of their homes…it’s incredible.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I am definitely not a social media expert. That said, my approach has been a slow but steady one. When I first started, getting a decent following felt impossible. But you keep at it, take it a day at a time, remain consistent, and slowly but surely, you build up your audience into a meaningful one.
