We recently connected with Joani DiCampli and have shared our conversation below.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Joani DiCampli and I live in a Beachtown called Long Neck, DE with my husband. As I stated in the previous question how I started Boobalicious and how my journey began I will tell you what problem I solved and part of the journey that I am still on today.
The problem Boobalicious solved was women sweating in areas, that we do not like talking about. Back in 2012, 2013 and early 2014, there were very few products for this problem (you might say I was the trend setter for the first breast & body deodorant on the market), What sets me apart from others is that I was the original creator of the first body stick on the market, in 2017 we became Boobalicioius, Breast & Body deodorant Stick. The reason I created this was I listen to my customers on how they loved Boobalicious and is it safe anywhere else, I would say yes as these ingredients are all natural, but of course consult your doctor as I can not claim that. I would also say just try it as every one has different reactions and I can not say if will work unless you try it. This is one thing that sets me apart from other brands, I do not promise or guarantee this will work on you as the truth is you have to experience yourself and I do not want to give false promises. Also, what sets me apart from other brands is I am a small women owned business, not a big corporation and handle all my sales at the moment by myself, so you are getting service from the brand owner.
To be real and Authentic with all of your readers, about a year and a half ago I failed my customers and myself as the journey is not easy and is very hard matter of fact. I have had a partner, that did not do right by me and demanded a $100,000 from me to get my percentage back from this partner, I have had a manufacture sell my deodorant using my formula, and how I found out was a follower of mine on social media sold deodorant to and went to this manufacture and when she received her package of deodorant she knew this was my formula. There are good people out there as I was appreciative of her telling me. Also, this manufacture fill my containers half way up and called her crying and said why did you do this, her response was your customers will not know??? But I know and in good faith can not sell these deodorants. When I did find out I used these as samples and cut price in half.
So where I was going with all this is that I failed and I want to give this another try as I truly love the customers I have and hope to gain more that will love my brand too. I sent out an email to all my customers and held myself accountable for the lack of customer service and yes did not send out orders. I am in the process of honoring all the orders and only have a few more to get out. Today at 60 I want to represent Boobalicious for all my customers who still beliver in me. After I sent this email out I have had customers reaching out to me and told me that they tried the well known brands that are out there but for them mine is the best and they are cheering me on. I am grateful for this article as I am coming out a better version of myself and want to continue this Brand so in the future I can help others again. I forgot to mention when I was developing Boobalicious, two of my 3 children were going through addiction and through this want to help others as I can. I so happy to say they are thriving and both sober.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The story I mention earlier is when I trusted a manufacture, as they were the underdog, like myself, and trusted her to do the right thing. Lesson learned is always sign a NDA.
In the beginning to earn my trust, they sent a contract on what was going to be done in the manufacturing process, labeling, etc.
They sent 20 deodorants at a time when I order over thousand products, this should of been a red flag.
How I pivot was I changed my formula to vegan and was for the better of the brand and for my customers.
When picking out a manufacture always, a good idea to go there and see if for yourself.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for me on growing my clientele is being real, authentic and not change who I am as a owner.
Listen to your customers and what they want – for example some of my customers said they smell Tea Tree Oils and now I put less in the formula and have not had a complaint since.
Reach out to your customers, out of the blue call them and thank them for their support, it goes a long way.
