We were lucky to catch up with Jessica Ireland recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
I actually started out on the other side of the camera as a model. I loved the creative energy of photoshoots, but I was always just as fascinated by what was happening behind the lens…the lighting, the angles, the way photographers could bring a whole story to life with a single frame. As I got older, I felt this pull to switch roles and become the one capturing those stories instead of being in them.
So I started small. I photographed my friends and family for free, practicing nonstop and learning everything hands-on…how to direct people, how to create emotion in an image, how to turn natural moments into something beautiful. After a while I reached a point where I felt confident enough to charge but I eased into it. I offered discounted rates at first, slowly raising my prices as my skills, experience and style evolved.
Honestly, it took me several years to feel comfortable charging normal, professional rates. Stepping into that confidence was its own journey. But each shoot taught me something and every client helped me grow into the photographer I am today. Switching from modeling to photography wasn’t a sudden leap…it was a gradual, intentional shift that allowed me to create from a place of passion and purpose.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Jess 💁🏼♀️ a lifestyle and portrait photographer based in Nashville and Kansas City. Like I mentioned earlier I started out as a model, which gave me a front row seat to the creative process. Over time, I realized my passion wasn’t just being in the photos but creating them. I loved watching photographers shape a story, set a mood and bring out something real in people. Eventually, it felt natural to shift from being the subject to being the storyteller.
Today I offer lifestyle, portrait, brand and travel photography. My work is warm, emotional and people-focused. I’m proud to say that I’ve photographed everyone from reality TV personalities and musicians to content creators and radio hosts. I’ve also traveled to different states and even a few countries to tell my clients’ stories. No matter who I’m photographing, the goal is always the same: make people feel comfortable, confident and genuinely themselves.
One thing that really sets me apart is my personality and the experience I create. I’m goofy, down-to-earth and super intentional about making sessions fun instead of intimidating. I always tell clients to make a playlist, bring a glass of wine or do whatever helps them loosen up. Music helps a lot! When people feel relaxed, the photos automatically become more honest and beautiful.
What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me. So many of them come back year after year and choose me for their most important events and memories. That tells me I’m delivering exactly what they love…images that feel real, meaningful, and deeply personal.
If there’s one thing I hope potential clients or followers take away, it’s this: photography is more than pictures. It’s connection, comfort, storytelling and creating a moment they’ll want to hold onto forever. That’s the heart of my brand and the reason I love what I do ☺️

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to capture real, meaningful moments that make people feel seen, confident and comfortable. I aim to create photos that tell authentic stories whether it’s a personal shoot, a brand shoot or a milestone moment so clients can treasure both the images and the experience. At the heart of it, I want people to see themselves in a way that feels true, beautiful and unforgettable.

Have you ever had to pivot?
One moment I had to really pivot was when AI generated images started becoming more mainstream. At first, I was intrigued…they’re impressive and can look really cool but as a photographer, I realized they can’t replace the personal experience I offer my clients. AI can’t capture a genuine laugh, a fleeting emotion or the connection between people. It’s not you in front of the camera and it’s not the storytelling that we’ve spent years learning, practicing and investing in as creatives.
So, I pivoted by leaning into what I do best: the human element. I focus even more on creating authentic experiences for my clients making them feel comfortable, relaxed, and seen because that’s something AI simply can’t replicate. I make sure to take time with them and ask them what their goal and vision is so we can make it come to life. It reminded me why this craft matters: it’s about more than just a picture. It’s about connection, trust and creating memories that last.
