We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Freeman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share a customer success story with us?
When I work with clients to overhaul the website that represents their business, there is a lot of strategy behind how we setup the website and organize the elements on the pages. I worked with a sleep coach last year who had designed and managed her own website for the last few years. Within just one week of the new website, they saw a 33% jump in sales. The following month, they reached their average monthly sales within just the first week. Almost a year later, and she’s been able to bring on two additional coaches to her team!
Jessica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I decided I was going to become a designer while I was in high school, and got my degree in design to fulfill that dream. I started doing freelance work in college, and continued to do it on the side while working in corporate as a designer as well. After two years of working full-time and managing my side-hustle, I finally took Jess Creatives full-time!
I quickly shifted from graphic design to web design to better serve my clients and their needs. I primarily work with online business owners and entrepreneurs who want to attract more clients with ease, instead of chasing after clients or feeling like they have to show up on social media every single day to get leads. Many of my clients feel as though their brand and website does not reflect who they are and the level of business they’re at, so they work with me to get an online presence that is strategic and beautiful.
As an award-winning designer, I focus on providing my clients with beautiful websites and brands that are also strategic and optimized for search. I’m an equal balance of design and strategy, or as some call my personality: pragmatic, yet quirky.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I took my business full-time in the fall of 2014. My husband and I had just purchased our first home, so it felt risky but I had a very consistent client roster, so I felt confident in my decision. Just two months later, my mom was unexpectedly killed in a car wreck on her way to work. My first year in full-time business ownership was an absolute rollercoaster as I tried to navigate my grief and depression while being isolated as I worked from home full-time. I didn’t have a team or any contractors to help me in my business, nor a business coach. I was navigating all of this new territory alone. But, I survived, and flourished, finishing the year making more than I did at my previous corporate job!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Content marketing has been my best source of clients for the last 7-8 years, outside of referrals. I have been blogging, podcasting, and creating YouTube videos for several years. On top of that content, I also create content for social media on a daily or weekly basis. My approach has always been to educate my audience, and provide value. So many business owners make the mistake of thinking of social media as advertising, when really it’s about building relationships and providing value. A few years ago, I calculated it and made $20,000 in one year from Instagram alone –– no ads, no giveaways, no discounts, no sleazy DM strategy. It was just a matter of showing up!
