We recently connected with Jessica Franz and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
The thing is: I’m so happy as a business owner, I would never get a regular job – and I never really have. But that is just me. As a very independent spirit and valuing my own space over anything, it would be hard for me to operate any other way. It makes me happy to oversee what I’m doing, when and how.
It is interesting that I was intimidated to have an actual business of my own at first. But once I overcame my fear of being overwhelmed or failing, I grew into everything that needs to be done and it became second nature to me.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m basically a former actress/ model who has loved the visual medium since forever. In front – and behind the lens. Photography was my hobby for a while and accidentally became a full-time business when I was looking for more financial stability. I’m still grateful every day that I get paid to do what I love.
It is part of my personality to be curious and expressing myself creatively, so I tend to not limit myself to a special service. I mostly do event photography for the social aspect but also enjoy working with brands on their marketing, do portraits and lifestyle. I am now expanding to get more business clients and conferences, because I always learn so much!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Funny you should ask because that is my license plate! As my motto – and because of my obsession with Friends. One of the biggest lessons I had to learn, always having been driven and enjoying staying busy, was that not everything is made for you. As hard as it was to stop acting in the beginning, I have never been as fulfilled and peaceful as I am now.
I still have other goals, such as getting my feature script made, but I’m much more at peace with what will materialize in this thing called my life. It is so much more important to enjoy the ride and keep dreaming that it doesn’t even matter if things come to fruition or not.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As a business owner – too many to count! As you can imagine. And again, not everything is meant for us. I used to pay for a monthly service to get me clients and about half of them were flaky or did not pan out. So, you learn very quickly to let go of expectations or you will drive yourself crazy.
One wonderful story I’d like to share is that I’d worked with this great company that immediately hired me for multiple events afterwards – which unfortunately got canceled due to low attendance at the time. As tough as it was to let go of the income, I understood and sent them positivity. They were so impressed with my attitude that they became one of my biggest clients.
