We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jess Moran a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jess, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.

I had studied acting years ago in college, but pursued a different direction in life for the sake of a romance. While that relationship didn’t last, I never lost the need to live creatively. After having children and feeling a bit lost as far as a career goes, I started letting a dream that I had hidden for years come to the surface – narrating audiobooks. I dove head first into coaching and training, and never looked back. It was what my soul needed, and ultimately, became one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for myself and my family.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

I am a whimsy and nature loving SOVAS Award-nominated narrator, and narrator of Spotify’s #1 Indie Audiobook of 2025, A DRIZZLE OF MAGIC by S. Usher Evans. Working with both indie authors and publishers brings me so much joy! Having narrated over 50 titles and counting, I get a thrill out of bringing depth and range to all the characters I voice. I particularly love a chance to narrate stories about strong women, awkward young people with gumption, shifting identities, and those shining a light on inclusivity. My training includes a BFA in Theater from Shenandoah Conservatory, and continued education in audiobooks with some of the best folks out there. With my love of mythological tales, my broad-cast quality home studio is fittingly titled, “Circe.” When not in the booth, you will find me in mud-caked boots, chasing my three children, or dancing (poorly, but happily).

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?

I truly believe stories heal. No matter what age you are, season of life you are in, or part of the world you are from, stories draw us together. They equip us for things we may not have faced yet, are facing internally, or provide us with words when we have none. Being able to voice these stories that are so vital to our humanity is my true passion.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

For me, being a creative is the only way I know how to navigate the world around me. I have aways been a very internal person, with an inner world that is constantly in motion. Expressing myself through creativity – narrating, music, writing, knitting, and gardening – connects me with the deepest part of myself. I love that I get to do this every day.
