We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jes Drew. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jes below.
Alright, Jes thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I am currently working on my August release, Corruption of Chimeras. It is a full-length novel retelling the King Midas from both the myths and actual history. I have always loved Greek mythology, and I have more recently begun researching ancient history. Since King Midas features in both fact and fiction, I knew his was a story I wanted to flesh out more. This became especially true when I discovered that his wife, Hermodike, is credited with inventing currency by Aristotle. Of course, an ancient woman in scholarship is very intriguing, so Corruption of Chimeras became a book about both Midas and Hermodike.

Jes, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been a self-published author for twelve years now. I started by writing superhero YA, but a few years ago I pivoted to fantasy. Since then I have written two complete series and several standalones. One of the two fantasy worlds I write in is an alternative version of ours where ancient history unfolds as it did in our past, but the difference is that the gods and goddesses of their mythology actually exist. It is my honor to be able to write what I love and watch it become what others enjoy reading.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started an Instagram only a couple years ago, around when I was switching to writing fantasy. I have been building my audience there slowly but surely. The best way I have found to do this is to follow other authors in my genre and see what they were doing. More than that, I interacted with their posts and built real relationships with them. Now we share ideas and often collaborate on posts so that we reach each others’ audiences that enjoy the same books.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Writing novels is my passion. I would write even if I didn’t make a single cent. However, I would love to be able to make writing my full-time job so I can write more. Toward that end, I am working on making my writing a self-sustaining business that can support me so that one day I can quit my day job and only write.
