Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jennaba Clarkson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jennaba, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result?
One of the best pieces of advice I ever gave a client was to slow down and not rush into a home they truly didn’t want, even though they were eager and emotionally attached to the idea of buying right away.
The client came to me excited and ready to shop for a home, but after reviewing their file, I could see the bigger picture. Their debt-to-income ratio was high, they had some recent negative credit activity, and they didn’t have much in reserves. Technically, we might have been able to get something approved, but it would not have been for the purchase amount they wanted in the market they were shopping in.
I had an honest conversation with them and told them what they needed to do to get in position to purchase what they truly wanted.
I put together a short game plan that included paying down a couple of debts, cleaning up their credit, and building a little cushion. It took a few months of discipline.
The result?
They came back stronger, qualified for a better loan structure and a higher purchase price, secured a lower monthly payment than what they were paying in rent, and walked into homeownership with confidence and excitement instead of stress. At closing, they told me they were grateful that I helped walk them to the finish line because now they feel stable and prepared as they were now official homeowners.
For me, that reinforced something I stand on in my business:
It’s not just about getting clients approved. It’s about building a trusted relationship and putting them in the right position to win long-term.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jennaba Clarkson, also known as “The Mortgage Expert Jen.” I’m a licensed Mortgage Loan Officer, life insurance agent, entrepreneur, and community advocate, and my passion is helping individuals and families create generational wealth through homeownership, financial education, and protection planning.
I got into the mortgage industry because I saw a gap, not just in access, but in education to obtaining generational wealth. So many people, especially in underserved communities, are told “no” without ever being told why or how to fix it. I wanted to be the person who not only helps clients get approved, but also helps them understand the process and build a strong financial foundation.
Over time, this became bigger than just doing loans, it became part of a larger mission. As a life insurance agent as well, I’m passionate about helping families not only build wealth, but also protect it. For me, it’s important to help people create stability from every angle, whether that means purchasing a home, preparing for the future, or making sure their assets and loved ones are covered.
I specialize in a wide range of loan programs, including FHA, Conventional, USDA, down payment assistance programs, and non-traditional financing options for self-employed borrowers and those with unique income situations. I also provide life insurance solutions that help individuals and families think beyond the moment and plan with intention.
What really sets me apart is my approach. I don’t just look at numbers, I look at the full story. I take time to educate my clients, walk them through every step, and create a strategy if they’re not quite ready yet. I’m very hands-on, transparent, and big on communication. My clients know they can call, text, or ask questions at any point, and I’m going to show up for them.
I also pride myself on building strong relationships with my realtor partners and my team, because I believe a smooth transaction takes collaboration. My goal is always to make the process feel less overwhelming and more empowering.
One of the things I’m most proud of is being able to help people who thought homeownership, generational wealth or financial stability was out of reach. Whether it’s first-time buyers, self-employed clients, families who have been told no before, or individuals looking to protect their loved ones and assets through life insurance, seeing them win with confidence means everything to me.
Outside of mortgage lending and insurance, I’m also passionate about community and empowerment. I’m involved in initiatives that focus on education, travel, and uplifting young women, because I believe success is about more than just finances, it’s about growth, exposure, confidence, and legacy.
What I want people to know about me and my brand is this: I’m not just here to close deals. I’m here to build genuine relationships, provide real guidance, and help people win long-term. When you work with me, you’re not just getting a lender or an agent, you’re getting an advocate, a strategist, and someone who genuinely cares about your journey.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe what helped me build my reputation in my market is consistency, transparency, and genuinely caring about everyone, even people that sometimes get overlooked, it’s not just about the transaction.
I’ve built trust by staying involved from start to finish, communicating clearly, and making sure my clients and partners feel supported throughout the process. I’m also very solution-oriented. A lot of people come to me after being told no, and instead of stopping there, I help them understand why and create a plan to get them in position.
I also think education has played a big role. I want my clients to understand their options, not just follow instructions blindly. That helps build confidence and long-term relationships.
At the end of the day, my reputation has been built on doing what I say I’m going to do, showing up consistently, and putting people in the right position, not just any position.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the biggest pivots I’ve had to make was shifting my mindset from just “closing loans” to truly building a brand and creating long-term impact.
When I first got into the mortgage industry, like most people, I was focused on getting deals done and learning the guidelines. But I quickly realized that if I wanted to grow and sustain success, I couldn’t rely only on transactions, I had to build relationships, create value, and position myself as a resource, not just a lender.
There were moments where deals fell apart, clients weren’t ready, or things didn’t go as planned, and instead of seeing those as losses, I had to pivot and start seeing them as opportunities to educate, build trust, and stay connected.
That shift led me to expand how I serve my clients, getting more involved in financial education, community outreach, and even becoming a life insurance agent so I could help families not only build wealth, but protect it as well.
The result of that pivot is that my business is now built on relationships, referrals, and impact, not just one-time transactions. And it’s allowed me to grow with more purpose and intention.
