We recently connected with Jeneé Porter and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeneé, thanks for joining us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
It was the summer before my last semester of college and I still didn’t quite know what I wanted to do after graduating. I had an internship in a traditional business setting. As I was sitting there in a cubicle day after day I thought to myself, “This can’t just be it.” I needed a creative outlet. Out of that experience Nascent by Nae was born.
Fortunately, they didn’t give us much work during the internship. So I used my time there to create the name & look of the brand. I wanted it to be of me but have meaning. I liked using my nickname; Nae. From there I researched words that started with ‘N’ on google. I kept playing with different words until I liked how something looked & sounded. I came across ‘nascent.’ Nascent means “beginning to exist” or “coming into existence.” At that point in my life on the dawn of graduating college, having always been defined mostly by academics I decided to finally exist in my own terms.
Okay great so I have a name. Now time for the real work. The first step I did in creating Nascent by Nae was starting an Instagram account. This allowed me to gauge my audience & see if people would even be interested in my blogging.
Next I started to work on a website. I didn’t have the funds to hire a web designer so I had to do some research to figure out the most beginner friendly & cost effective web host. I already knew WordPress would be challenging despite it’s great capabilities. So I started with Wix. Personally I didn’t like building out everything in Wix & I felt that it was time consuming. Then, someone recommended Sqaurespace to me noting how user friendly it is. I love the free templates that Squarespace has that you can tailor to your liking. To this day people think I can design websites. No. lol. I always recommend Sqaurespace.
I remember how my stomach was is knots the day I decided to post my first blog post. It’s crazy to think that was almost 6 years ago. Time has flown by. From there, everything else has been research, networking, and trial & error. When I first started my blog site I thought it had to fit a certain mold. What I’ve learned over time, which is so great about blogging is that you can completely make it your own.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a business professional by day and an entrepreneur by night. I would describe myself as a creative intellect.
NascentbyNae.com is a blog site that I run with the goal of helping millennial women navigate life. I focus on the areas of Fashion & Beauty, Lifestyle, Health & Wellness, & Professional.
I believe my purpose is to give others resources and to creatively share knowledge. In addition to running a blog site, I also act as a business consultant. I am most proud of how I’ve helped individuals grow whether it be through their experience with Nascent by Nae or via my business consulting.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What I think helped build my reputation within my market is being consistent, being authentic, & networking. My business is primarily internet based. However, networking has allowed me to meet people to form more genuine relationships compared to just online relationships. This is where being consistent & being authentic come in to play. People will find that I’m the same person online that I am in person, if not better. This further allowed me to build a solid reputation as a blogger & business owner.
Any advice for managing a team?
The best advice for managing a team and maintaining high morale is to lead by example. You can’t expect your team to be high functioning and organized if you aren’t. You set the tone for your team in every aspect.
