We recently connected with Jeff Lucky and have shared our conversation below.
Jeff, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Right now I’m preparing to release an album with my group The Brane Trust entitled “The Public Weapon.” Our first single and video is for “Coke Crazed Negroes,” where we examine the early 20 century myth that led directly to the creation of racist drugs laws and mass incarceration. Throughout the album we tackle a variety of topics including the education system on “Ni**er Factory,” activism in the social media age on “Follow Back,” and the nature of organized religion on “Age of Believing,” which is a rap interpretation of Thomas Paine’s novel The Age of Reason. We also shine a light on lesser known historical figures on songs like “Nip It in the Bud,” dedicated to Charles Lewis, a black soldier lynched in his uniform after returning from World War 1, and “Mary’s Day Off,” a retelling of the heroics of Mary Touvestre, a formerly enslaved seamstress who became an unlikely spy during the Civil War. Altogether this album is the most important subject matter I’ve ever written about, and I’m hopeful that anyone who is kind enough to listen will be both enlightened and entertained.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been a filmmaker and music artist for well over a decade. My first industry job as a musical artist was writing lyrics for Cold Case on CBS. As a filmmaker my first film was a feature length documentary, “Donor,” and since then I have written, directed, edited, and scored several short films and commercials.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to push myself to the limits of my creativity and leave behind an authentic body of work (music and film) that reflects my personal philosophy.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is knowing I executed an idea the way I intended to. That feeling of personal fulfillment is unmatched.
