We were lucky to catch up with Jeanique Lightsey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jeanique thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I would love to start by saying there’s not many sowing financial seeds of education into the next generation! At Plant The Seed Financial Literacy our main focus is the next generation we know that the school system is not set up to teach all children how to fish so we fill that void in teaching them foundational tools that will impact their futures!

Jeanique , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hey hey new planter fam(that’s my tribe) I am Jeanique Lightsey the creator and owne of Plant The Seed Financial Literacy where we equip single moms with the tools and resources to raise financially LITerate children! We are changing the narrative by doing things that’s not normal in communities that look like me! Our core curriculum is based of the plant growth cycle which is 6 phases! Our phases are 1. Money Values, 2. Budgeting, 3. Banking, 4. Credit, 5. Investing, 6. Intro to Taxes/Insurance! We cater to children of all ages even as young as 2 we have resources for our youngest planters as well! We pride ourselves on having something for everyone no matter the budget from DIY resources, to monthly zoom classes to 8week programs and Mentorships let’s grow together!!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One very important lesson that I had to learn and still is learning everyday is meeting people where they are! I haven’t always been as savvy with my finances so allowing people the grace and tools to help them grow from where they are in order to sow into their children properly! Everyone want get why it’s super important to be proactive instead of reactive when it pertains to financial growth!

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
How did I come up with funding for my business is a very simple but complicated answer for some and that’s saving! I’ve always been a saver I had to eventually learn in order to grow my money I would have to invest it and that’s exactly what I did with my business I invested into myself through investing into my business and this all came from good money management skills and saving the extra that I had to save!
