We were lucky to catch up with Jazmine Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jazmine, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Moma Made It was born out of a bucket list hobby due to COVID 19 in 2020. I went from “on the go” working mom of 1 to a Stay-at-Home mom of 2 and bored and broke. Penny Pinching led me to making my very first cake for my oldest son’s 4th birthday. The cake was dry, overly textured, a little burnt, and with those hard candy letters from Walmart that should never be eaten. The motivation to be better came from my niece’s 5th birthday 3 months later. This is were my first custom cake for a party along with diy cookies. The cake and cookies were a hit and the encouragement to sell my products were endless.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a Stay At Home Mom who has turned a hobby to a business. I bake uniquely designed homemade desserts that are beautiful and mouth watering. A perfect one stop shop for the dessert table trend. I customize cakes and cupcakes, decorated sugar cookies and cake pops to match all themes of parties and special events.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Building clientele can be a challenge in a small city. My first issue with building was learning the value of word of mouth. People bringing up my business in conversation has brought a lot of my orders.. I had to figure out how to meet more people to spread the word. I joined the local farmer’s market and started meeting the people in my area. After committing to a full season at the market I was able to get a bunch of orders from people walking by who had events coming up, people who couldn’t find a baker to create the design they asked for, or friends and family members helping another by sharing my business cards. Pushing through the pressure of selling at the market weekly while still keeping up with my family responsibilities has grown my clientele double.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
When I became a SAHM after having my second child COVID hit. I spent a lot of time baking and trying different recipes to pass the time. As a hobby baker I often made cookies and cakes for friends and family to share. After tons of encouragement and support I focused more on the quality of my designs and techniques to increase production. My hobby turned to a business when I created business social media pages and posting as often as I could. It has shined a light on my craft for more to see. The growth of my business has allowed me to acquire a website, focus on branding and marketing, and join classes for bakers/business owners.
