We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jay Torrisi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jay below.
Jay, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I first got an intro to soldering in the 7th grade, when I made my first circuit board. After that I was self taught in refining my skills. Practice is what makes me faster and faster at doing LED light jobs. My attention to detail and being a perfectionist is my most essential skills.
Jay, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jay Torrisi, and I am one of the founding members of the Lit Riderz. It all started 3 years ago around 2020. Tired of sitting at home, my fiance and I bought our first RV, and started taking it out and traveling. We soon came to the realization that we needed to have bikes to ride around on, while we were out camping so we could explore our surroundings. After an awful experience of renting some bikes to ride while we were on vacation, I decided that we were going to get ebikes. We went to Venice to ride our bikes, and ended up making a bunch of friends. One of those friends and fellow Lit Rider, is Javier Covarrubias, who has an incredible custom lit bike and sound trailer, it’s one of those setups that draws attention. It has LED lights on the wheels and frame of the bike, and the matching trailer has custom fiberglass work housing an incredible sound system. When I first saw his setup, I knew I wanted my bike to not only be lit like his, but I wanted to be rolling loud too! My next mission was to start getting my bike lit. I was introduced to a guy named Joey (Custom LED Lights) who is known in the Venice community for lighting up bikes. I contacted him and arranged to have him put his Tron lights on our wheels. That’s when the LED addiction began. From there, I began by lighting the frame of my bike, and as I refined and honed in my soldering skills, I saw that this could be something that I could do for other people, and could end up being lucrative. The more we rode our bikes, the more people we met who were LIT like us, and we started meeting up, and riding everywhere. Eventually we went to Vegas for a huge bike event called OBC (One Big Club), and were inspired by all the bike clubs. After we came home from that amazing experience, it was only natural what came next. We started our own club, and Lit Riderz was born. I could see the joy we bring to people while out riding together, and wanted to take our love for bikes, and LED lights to the next level. With 2 decades of experience of being a DJ and running a production company, I knew I could implement my skills to create an amazing rolling production. We put our minds together, organized, and practiced formation riding. We currently have 25 members with fully LIT bikes and 7 sound trailers with almost 10,000 watts of synchronized audio. In 2022, we were the “Overall Parade Winner” for Temecula’s Electric Light Parade. In 2023 we won “Best In Show” at the Belmont Shore Christmas Parade, and won “Sweepstakes” in the City of Norco Horsetown Parade of lights. We also were invited to perform at this year’s 91st Annual Hollywood Christmas Parade.
I ride with the club on weekends, and during the week, I do custom LED artwork on bikes and PEVs (Personal Electric Vehicles). I can do anything from a basic lighting job, all the way up to a full custom artistic work of LED art, depending on your budget. My previous experience in electronics and mobile audio, gives me an edge when it comes wiring and soldering. The satisfaction of giving people my artistic vision for their bikes, along with professional installation of the LED lights is what keeps clients coming to me for their light jobs. Our reputation solidifies the high standard and quality of lights we provide as not only as a club, but a brand as well. If you want to get LIT like us, reach out to us on our social medias @LitRiderz on Instagram and Facebook.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me is watching the smiles on peoples faces when they see their bike fully lit up for the first time.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My main goal is to create joy for people and literally light up people’s lives. Knowing that I’m not only encouraging people to get outside, be active, and put on a show, but promoting safe riding at night, drives me to continue doing this for as long as I can.
