We were lucky to catch up with Jay Krymis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jay, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I have been fortunate enough to be self employed for over 30 years. I own bars which is demanding and a lot of work. But, allows me to take time out or off to audition, study and leave town for jobs when needed. I have actually never had a proper 9-5 job and have a feeling I would not survive very long in that world. I often wonder what life would be like if I took a “normal’ job path and worked steady hours. I imagine my life would be less stressful and more financially stable. But, could I live with the thought and regret of having not followed my creative calling. I do not think there is a right or wrong path.. a good or bad life path.. we all need to follow our own true north.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was bit by the acting bug in grade school and have been doing it in one degree or another ever since. Recently I have been lucky enough to be working steadily as an actor. It has been a long, long journery… so many ups and downs but I would not trade it for anything :)

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As an actor the most rewarding part is the process. Of course seeing folks get joy out of the final product (film, TV show, commercial) I enjoy. But I LOVE being on set and rehearsing and collabing with other creatives. I have been lucky to worl with some truly amazing people that proudly and unaplogetically dance to the beat of their own drum. These people inspire me and I hope I can somehow do a little of that for others too.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
As a creative… especially an older one the judgement and the questions are always present. I have to constantly quell that little voice of doubt that we all have and sometimes our culture amplifes. It took me a long time to trust myself.
