We recently connected with Jason Thomas and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jason thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How has Covid changed your business model?
Covid has truly changed the way I operate in tattooing . I was use to having people come into the shop and meeting new clients . Finding out what ideas/concepts they wanted on their tattoo. The new way I’ve been taking appointments is strictly through emails and making appointments via online due to covid. I honestly like this new way of scheduling the appointments but I miss the interactions between my clients.
Jason , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My story started 2012 in the San Fernando valley CA. I worked in a tattoo shop as a apprentice for 2 years to understand the ins and outs of compliance and learning how the business works . I was good at art but to learn how to tattoo was a whole new talent you have to learn . After two years of tattooing at my first shop I moved to another with a whole new crew of tattooers . It was fresh to further my talents with new styles /techniques/ and new ideologies to make into tattooing . I started off with traditional tattooing then moved into black and grey, then when I moved to my next shop I leaned neotradional and blackwork . Through out my years I learned to see what my style was through all the styles. In the end I moved to Austin Texas to moon tattoo . They are all blackwork style shop. I came in doing anime / neotradional / blackwork as my specialty. Austin has been a place for me to do my style I want to do as in anime tattooing . I have been tattooing professionally since 2014 and I feel like my style has evolved through out the years .
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Honestly to build a audience is still a form I don’t understand . I always tell people put out what you like and would like to come back to you. Don’t change who you are for likes . Be who you are and people will see you for who you are . I’m a dork all the time and people love that I can put that out . For my social media post I don’t put filters so you can see the work for what it is . I believe that’s where people see your true work and have followed me for the artwork. If you put something out there , trust there will be one person to like it .
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
New clients are from all over . I have a lot from Instagram (from my Instagram Jthomasinks and also from the shop) . Surprisingly I’ve been getting new clients from TikTok , they’ve seen some of the tattoo videos I put up and messaged me on. I also have a website (Jthomasinks.com) that people find me on. With all that, a lot of people tell me they had a friend/ co worker/ or a random person they saw out that had a tattoo done by me . Word of mouth is the strongest way to get new clients .
