We were lucky to catch up with Jasmine Sykes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
If I as an entrepreneur could start over from scratch, 10 years ago when I first developed and launched JMarie Media, I would have started with building a foundation of relationships first. The most important, vital, precious value you can hold as a person of customer service is the rapport of relationships. Relationships can hold more weight than money in the any field of business involving people. I do believe that if I would have learned this in the beginning of me career, I would have the biggest PR Firm in the world. Just knowing that learning to love what I do, networking, staying consistent and active in my field. I would be unstoppable. I am still going to accomplish this goal, it’s just taking a little longer because I am learning along the way.
Jasmine, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jasmine Sykes, I go by JMarie. I am from a very small city in the Midwest, Milwaukee, WI to be exact. I am the founder and CEO of JMarie Media, The Million Dollar PR Firm. I started my business in March of 2012 as an editor for my own magazine. I then grew a great love and passion for branding and marketing. As, I began to grow, I wanted more for my brand. How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Becoming a mother of four amazing children, working as a State of Georgia Licensed Realtor, and an entrepreneur is one of the most beautiful challenges of life I get to enjoy. As a mother and business owner learning to adapt to change quickly and effectively has helped me develop the skill of discipline, patience and strength. It is a blessing to be called to service others as mother my nurturing skills shaped me to love people as whole, although growing up no one taught me that. It wasn’t until I became a mother at 18, that I learned how to love and what it felt like to receive unconditional love back. The power of love is the reason I am such an amazing Realtor and even better publicist. I nurture my clients in both fields of my career and allows people to feel valued and appreciated. I treat my work relationships the same. So I would have to say my children are the reason I have such a great loving heart. Pivoting my personal life into my career on a daily basis is the reason JMarie Media is as powerful as it has become. As well as hiring a team with like minds, intentions and energy.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that money has the most power in the industry and learn that respect, passion, relationships and integrity can get you into doors that money can not. Starting my business in 2012, I was highly invested in getting my clients on the radio, interviews, commercials, photo shoots etc, to help brand them. As time went on over the years I have learned that yes, money is an important matter, but learning and building a rapport with the people you are paying for services from has more value. Its like now, even with this interview. Erika reached out with a goal and although I may receive 2-300 emails a day, if Erika sends me an email she is a priority for me because I respect her consistency and taking out the time to get to know me and what my brand does.
