We recently connected with Jasmine Clark and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I’ve been wearing hair extensions for over 27 years. I love them. I installed my first set at 14 years old and it was love at first sight! I found that during this time I had tried numerous companies. Many companies claim to deliver great hair extensions, but after installing them, I found that the hair was not of the quality that they claimed. I saw that the industry was lacking ethical companies and great customer service. I felt like there were companies lacking owners that looked like me and these companies didn’t care about their consumer, they were just in it to make a quick buck. After many years of trial and error and thousands of dollars later, I decided I would create my own hair extension business. I would center it around nurturing my consumers from the inside out. I came up with the idea and name at a difficult and ruff time in my life. I started going to groups and listening to the stories of other women who were just like me and dealing with similar situations as my own. Thus came the name Herstory Hair. I vowed that I would create not only a hair company that delivered high quality hair extensions and excellent customer service, but I would also provide a platform where women could share their stories to uplift, encourage and inspire one another.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Herstory Hair provides premium hair extensions to busy women. Our customer doesn’t have the time to worry about her hair. We provide extensions that saves her time and money. I realized that when you purchase hair extensions that are not of good quality we waste a lot of time and money. When the extensions are not manageable, meaning they shed, tangle and don’t hold a curl we spend more time on styling. Then, after we wear this unmanageable hair we throw it in the trash and that’s a waste of money. Our extensions are high quality, meaning that they come from a single donor with the cuticles aligned and intact. This thus minimizes shedding and tangles. The hair isn’t made up of synthetic fibers thus making it easier to curl and color like your own hair. And because of these circumstances when you take the hair out, you put it up and wear it again, saving you money. We’re so passionate about saving our customers time that we even put together a line of products that require no salon. These products are quick and easy to install yourself in the comfort of your own home. We provide a solution for women who are pressed for time with our Insta-pony, clip-ins and headband wigs. Not only are we the go to choice for premium, quick and manageable hair extensions, Herstory Hair also provides a platform where women can share their stories to uplift, encourage and inspire one another. We call this Queens Talk by Herstory Hair. We go live with other women and talk about life, mental health and other various topics. We have a great time. We converse, laugh and cry sometimes. We believe that beauty starts within. One of our goals is to always nurture our customers from the inside out. We have big plans for Herstory Hair and we’ve only scratched the surface!

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I think the most effective strategy has been to just be my authentic self. I show my customers that I’m just like them. I have good times and bad times. I don’t have it all together. I too juggle career, business, family just like them. I let them see the person behind the brand. I show them who they’re spending their hard earned dollars with. I not only talk about hair but I talk about real life. I get on an intimate level with them in my emails and content. I truly love women and I nurture them from the inside, then I make them look great on the outside.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I invested in a business coach. I feel like it was the best investment I ever made. When I first started Herstory Hair, I did just that just started it. When I hired my coach, I began to get to the nitty gritty of the hair extension business. I found that I was just scratching the surface of what it meant to be a hair extension business owner. All I knew was I had these great high performing products and I wanted to sell them. Lol She really opened my eyes to the backend of my business. I would tell anybody that in order to succeed they need to learn from someone that has been through it. Someone who shares the same passions as you.
