We recently connected with Jasmin Gonzalez and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had started sooner?
If I could go back in time, I would have started my career sooner than later. Especially before I became a single mom. I started the beauty academy back in 2019 and as a single mom, it was a difficult time. I worked a 9-5 Full-Time job and going to school on nights was very tiring. I couldn’t do internships or do more makeup courses because of work and my daughter. I do sometimes wished I have started after high school in 2011 when I wasn’t thinking about having children and had a lot of free time. I believe if I would have started sooner, I would have also gone through cosmetology school as well and would have been doing both hair and makeup for TV/Film and Special Events. My experience would have been off the roof and I would have had a very different look on my resume. But, as I look back, I wouldn’t have had the experience I have today if I started when earlier. Yes, there were some downs during my career because many people wanted free makeup looks but overall, I lived and learned so much during those times. Now, as a freelance makeup artist, I was able to work with other artists and learn from them. I know if I would have done this in my early 20s, I would have been so naive and selfish. I’m just glad I’m not like that as a makeup artist because I know I wouldn’t have made it til this day with that mentality.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a freelance makeup artist based in Fullerton, CA. I also lived in Las Vegas, NV for a few years and my makeup artistry started to bloom during my time out there. I got into the beauty industry because I always loved makeup and wanted to help others with their makeup techniques just how I used to do back in high school and college. I learned what my niche was as a makeup artist when I lived in Las Vegas, which was Editorial, Special Effects (SFX), Cosplay, and Glam makeup. There was so much discipline to myself to learn how to pose models and also what to prepare for photo shoots and festivals. I also worked at Paul Mitchell the School and while I worked there as a front desk clerk, I learned about how to teach students and also the proper way to give advice to the public. I also had the chance to teach twice at this beauty school and even though I felt like no attention was given to me, the few people who were listening and asking questions made things go smoother for me. I also got the opportunity to work for a company whom I always supported back in my 20s, Insomniac Events. My work did do a big swift to doing makeup on models/performers to teaching. When I wanted to quit, my boyfriend at the time gave me an idea to simply start doing makeup tutorials instead. And that’s what I started later this year, I became a beauty YouTuber and also continue to do makeup for festivals. One thing for sure that I could say, there’s so many opportunities out there and which ever one calls you…go for it. For myself, it was working as a makeup artist for a festival and also continue to show others how to do makeup on themselves of their fav characters.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew there were beauty communities like The Powder Group. I’m actually part of this group and it is like a membership for makeup artists but we do get to be part of something great. We get to network with other professional makeup artists and also learned from their experiences. Also, we get to work with each other as well if someone needs an artist. I know I would have become a better makeup artist if I knew about this sooner.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I have many goals but I always strive to one goal which is to teach others & allow them to see results. My goal has always been to teach those who believe they can’t when they can. I have realized my growth in creativity and it has impacted other makeup artists to do the same. I was told once at a fashion show that I inspired them to continue their beauty career when they saw one of my makeup posts (which was a special effects look).
