Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Janina Scarlet. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Janina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
As a survivor of trauma, abuse, and assault, it is very important to me to support other trauma survivors in every way I am able. As a trauma specialist, I work with clients who experienced trauma. As an author, it is very meaningful to me to support people via books. I focus my writing on letting people know that they are not alone in their struggles and that they will get through the challenge that they are facing. One of the most meaningful projects I’ve ever worked on was writing the “Super-Women: Superhero Therapy for Women Battling Depression, Anxiety and Trauma” book. This book is my letter of support to all women who have ever experienced trauma, abuse, or prejudice. I intentionally designed the book to read as group therapy, so that as a reader, you can interact with the characters in the book and feel supported by them.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a clinical psychologist, award-winning author, an a full-time geek. I specialize in Superhero Therapy – a method of incorporating popular culture narratives into evidence-based therapy to help people with PTSD and anxiety. The goal of Superhero Therapy is to help people feel less alone in their experience and to learn to become their own version of a superhero in real life.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I always knew I wanted to go into psychology and I’ve always known that I wanted to be a writer as well. At first, I started my career believing that I had to go into it in a traditional sense – either seeing clients, or teaching, or conducting research. However, over time, I was able to see that it was possible to combine all my passions together. I now see clients and write books in order to help people discover their own hidden superpowers, whether it refers to the powers of creativity or compassion, or outreach. I left my job at a hospital to work in a private practice and to dedicate my life to seeing clients and writing and I couldn’t be happier.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My main mission is to help my readers discover their own superpowers and to empower themselves. We all have a gift to share with this world, whether it’s your kindness, your expertise, your story, or your creativity. My mission is to inspire people to find their own unique gifts that they can share with the world because someone out there right now needs exactly what you have to offer.
