We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Janeen Merceus a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Janeen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
My journey into owning my own practice began over a decade ago when I first started working in a medical spa as a registered nurse. At that time, I was eager to learn and grow in the field of aesthetics. I immersed myself in hands-on learning, working closely with experienced providers in both medical spa and laser practice settings. Those early years were extremely valuable because they allowed me to develop technical skills, understand patient care in aesthetics, and learn the operational side of the business.
While gaining experience, I also realized the importance of continuing my education. I returned to school to further my knowledge and professional growth. In 2020, I completed my Master’s degree, and in 2025, I proudly earned my Doctoral degree. This educational journey, combined with years of clinical experience, helped shape the provider I am today.
My background in neuroscience nursing also played a significant role in my aesthetic practice. Working in neuroscience strengthened my attention to detail, precision, and commitment to patient safety—qualities that are essential in aesthetic medicine.
When it came time to establish my own practice, there were several important steps involved. One of the first challenges was finding the right location. I wanted a space that reflected my vision: a small, boutique-style practice where patients receive personalized care and where the injector truly gets to know each patient. Creating that environment was very important to me because aesthetics is not just about treatments—it’s about building trust and relationships.
Like many entrepreneurs, there were challenges along the way. Finding the perfect space, building the practice from the ground up, and establishing a patient base all required dedication, patience, and resilience. However, every step was a learning experience that contributed to the growth of the practice.
Looking back, I believe that the journey itself prepared me for success. If I were to do anything differently, I might have invested even earlier in mentorship and business education within aesthetics. Understanding both the clinical and business aspects is extremely valuable when starting your own practice.
My advice to young professionals who are considering starting their own practice is simple: gain experience and continue your education. Work in environments where you can learn, develop your skills, and understand the full scope of patient care. Most importantly, always prioritize patient safety. In aesthetics, safety, knowledge, and ethical practice must always come first.
With dedication, education, and experience, it is absolutely possible to build a successful and meaningful practice.

Janeen, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For those who may not know me, my journey in healthcare and aesthetics has been shaped by both passion and dedication to patient care. I began my career as a registered nurse and gained experience in several clinical areas, including neuroscience, which helped develop my attention to detail, precision, and commitment to patient safety. Over time, I discovered my passion for aesthetic medicine while working in a medical spa and laser practice, where I gained hands-on experience and developed my skills in cosmetic treatments.
Education has always been a priority in my career. I continued advancing my knowledge while working in the field, earning my Master’s degree in 2020 and completing my Doctoral degree in 2025. With over a decade of education and experience in nursing and aesthetics, my goal has always been to combine clinical expertise with artistic precision.
In my practice, I focus on aesthetic treatments that enhance a person’s natural beauty. My philosophy has always been that less is more. I believe in natural aesthetics—creating subtle, balanced results that allow patients to look like the best version of themselves rather than looking overdone. My approach is to build results over time and focus on consistency, safety, and long-term outcomes.
I offer a range of aesthetic services designed to help patients feel confident in their appearance while maintaining a natural look. My practice is designed as a boutique-style environment where each patient receives personalized care and where the injector truly gets to know their clients. This allows me to understand each patient’s goals and create customized treatment plans that align with their individual features and preferences.
What sets me apart is my clinical background, my dedication to continued education, and my focus on patient safety. My experience in neuroscience nursing has strengthened my precision and careful approach to treatments, which is essential in aesthetic medicine.
What I am most proud of is the journey—spending over a decade building my knowledge, refining my skills, and ultimately creating a practice that reflects my values. I want potential clients to know that my brand is built on trust, education, safety, and natural results. My goal is always to enhance natural beauty, help patients feel confident, and provide treatments that evolve gradually over time.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been word of mouth. In the aesthetics industry, trust is everything. When patients have a positive experience and love their results, they naturally share that with friends, family, and colleagues. Those personal recommendations are incredibly powerful because they come from genuine experiences.
My focus has always been on building strong relationships with my patients, providing safe treatments, and delivering natural-looking results. When people feel confident, comfortable, and cared for, they are more likely to return and refer others.
Consistency, honesty, and patient education have also played a major role in building trust. I take the time to understand each patient’s goals and create personalized treatment plans that enhance their natural beauty. Because my philosophy is “less is more,” many patients appreciate the subtle, natural approach and continue to refer others who are looking for the same type of aesthetic care.
Word of mouth has allowed my practice to grow organically while maintaining a loyal and supportive client base. It’s something I’m incredibly grateful for because it reflects the trust my patients have in my work and my brand.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Yes, absolutely. If I could go back, I would choose the same profession and specialty again. The field of nursing and aesthetics has provided me with so many opportunities for growth, learning, and making a meaningful impact in people’s lives.
Nursing opened the door for me to work in diverse clinical areas, including neuroscience, which strengthened my attention to detail and patient care skills. Transitioning into aesthetics allowed me to combine my clinical knowledge with artistry, helping patients feel confident while enhancing their natural beauty.
This profession has also allowed me to continue evolving through education and professional development. From becoming a registered nurse to earning my Master’s degree in 2020 and completing my Doctoral degree in 2025, each step has created new opportunities and expanded what I am able to offer my patients.
What I appreciate most is that this career allows me to blend science, patient care, and creativity while building meaningful relationships with my patients. It has been an incredibly rewarding journey, and I would absolutely choose this path again.
