Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Janae Erickson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Janae thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
My brand is called In Your Own Skin Boudoir. When I was deciding on different names, I wanted something not only unique and self explanatory, but something that envelops my brand as a whole. There are SO many boudoir photography businesses out there that turn their models into literal Barbie dolls. Smoothing their skin down to a pulp, making their eyes look plastic, etc. I want to show women that they are beautiful in their own skin, without all these crazy magazine edits on their bodies.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I began with photography in 2016, and have been running with it for almost 9 years now. Boudoir wasn’t my first type of photography, I started with families, newborns, weddings, etc. I still get to do those when I have time, which is great! Boudoir was something I didn’t discover until about 2022 when my friend was interested in a boudoir shoot. I slowly began accepting boudoir clients and as the next years unfolded it became more and more. I am now finishing 2024 with 43 shoots done just in this year.
My clients come in, get their hair and makeup done, and then get to choose outfits to wear from my closet of over 100 pieces. We jump right into their shoot and then after it’s done, she will get to look at all her photos and make selections just one hour after the shoot is done!
Something I am really proud of is that we have a 100% satisfaction rate. I’ve never had a woman leave my studio with less confidence than when she came in. She comes in, gets pampered and hyped up and leaves a whole new woman. It’s an incredible process to witness.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
This is an easy answer. It’s word of mouth. People leave my studio feeling so amazing and having a whole new perspective on their bodies and self worth and tell everyone about it. It’s the best compliment ever when someone comes in as a referral.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I’m always unapologetically myself. I don’t hide my mistakes, my silliness or my faults. Being 100% authentic with my clients has never steered me wrong when talking to potential clients.
