We recently connected with Jamille Leonard and have shared our conversation below.
Jamille, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea originated for the love myself, mom, and grandmother has for great handbags. I just recently graduated from college unsure of my plan but grandmother made it loud & clear that I need to make a move with grad school or get a job in my field. Reluctant, on following suggestions I came up with a game plan and pitched my idea to two of my closet friends. The birth of The Clutch Express Co, LLC made its debut.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The Clutch Express has a mission to consistently provide a one of a kind experience through our customer service and accessories to ensure an enjoyable and memorable shopping experience for every accessory lover. We have adopted a people-first approach at every level.
Accessories that The Clutch Express provide are always at the forefront of their market segment. Exclusivity is key. All styles are hand-picked by the owner specifically for each clutch lover to reflect their individual personalities and aesthetic.
I’ve always had an eye for accessorizing, and it has set my style apart from the crowd with my choice of vibrant handbags & accessories. I receive many compliments from friends, and even strangers, for how she pairs her choice of clothing with my accessories, highlighting my favorite accessory; the clutch.
After earning my bachelors degree from Stillman College, I began saving to invest in my dream of becoming a business owner. From there, The Clutch Express was born. “As a woman, I know a nice handbag makes your outfit stand out. This is my baby, my brand, and I’m sticking by it to make every woman happy.”
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The main lesson that I will like to unload is that you can not do everything on your own, and asking for help does not show a sign of weakness . As a black female, we have to go the extra mile to prove ourself worthy to be built for what entrepreneurship comes with. I truly had to let my guard down and allow people to teach me & guide me because everyone is not out to get you.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My main audience was built based on myself of how I carry myself and most of all support of friends & family. I had to post everyday, email promotions, create business social pages. Also, drive my site traffic through Wix, which is connected to google & all social media platforms.
