We were lucky to catch up with Jamie Simon Sr recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jamie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
There was a barbershop about 20 yards from the home I grew up in. Seeing people getting their haircut and paying attention to how happy they were vs how they went in. Sparked my interest.
I was around 15yrs old. It was like magic. After getting many haircuts from my grandfather, who was not a barber. I asked him. Can I borrow his clippers.. He looked at me and asked, what was I going to do. Cut my own hair of course. I wasn’t a barber either. I started practicing on anyone that would sit in the folding chair under the carport. I called it my barber chair.
My professional journey started in 2011. After working a host of dead-end jobs. And still cutting a little hair in my leisure. I realized a good haircut, listening to people talk about their day. experiences and life lessons helped boost one’s self-esteem. Although, each person had their own issues. It helped me to form a vision of the “barber life” I wanted.
Walking away from my normal 9-5 job wasn’t easy. I was seeking a better life so I had to take a different path. A path that would lead me to the essential things needed for life success. Opening my first barbershop circa 2015 in Lafayette La. was a great feeling. I was finally a licensed barber. I was able to make my own magic.
That journey lead me to produce a mission that’s true. An a mission a can repeatedly do without out forcing it. Purpose..
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Jamie Simon Sr a Master Barber and owner of Custom Barbering by Butta Blends. Which is a full-service barbershop located in the heart of Houston, Texas that offers high end luxury grooming services. While providing clients with exceptional customer service, cutting edge techniques and transformational styles. Our services include haircuts, beard grooming & maintenance, facials, nose & ear waxing, hair enhancements and hair line restoration. Jamie is not only a Master Barber but he is also a Product Developer and has created a unique line of beard and hair products. It is his knowledge about the chemical compounds of products and techniques. The application that sets him apart from most stylists, because you are not just getting a barber.
But a product developer. Who has a deeper level of knowledge about the products that are being used on theirs clients because of the research based evident that he has conducted in order to create his product line.
Jamie is a native from Lafayette, Louisiana. He developed a passion for “barber life” at the age of 15 . When his grandfather allowed him to borrow a pair of clippers after his haircut.
After cutting the hair of his friends, family and any willing person who would sit in a chair, Jamie decided to become a professional barber and opened his first barbershop in 2015. He moved to Houston in 2018 to expand his business and has enjoyed the opportunity to network with fellow barbers in the industry.
Throughout his career Jamie has had a particular interest in the interface between mental health and generational poverty and the role that education, mentoring and indigenous leadership can play. His goal is to help people feel better about themselves in order to promote positive self-esteem.
He believes that having a great mentor is the first key to addressing these issues so he welcomes the opportunity to mentor young people in his barbershop by allowing them to work as volunteers or interns in order to gain valuable work experience and learn about the day to day life of an entrepreneur within the barber industry.
Jamie has a heart for people and is deeply committed to giving back to underserved communities by hosting free haircut events and has provided both financial support and countless hours of community service while using his personal life stories as an example to inspire and mentor young people.
In his leisure Jamie loves golfing, fishing, cooking, traveling and spending time with his family and friends.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The strategy is.. Conduct business with integrity & fairness. Focus on customers needs.
Provide quality products & services.
Be genuine.
Don’t be afraid to have a conversation with someone you don’t know. And whatever you do.. do it to the best of your ability. Repeat.
