We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jamie Boulton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jamie below.
Jamie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I studied Electrical Engineering and Communications at Northumbria University in Newcastle, UK
I got a job straight out of university for Mercury Communications in London with full graduate training program. I worked for them for four years before taking voluntary redundancy in 1994 Using the pay off I took a year out and travelled around the world On my return I worked in telecoms to pay of my travel debts and worked on film sets at nights and weekends. After a year or so I had to decide between telecoms and film/tv industry when I was offered a great job at AT&T and a runner job in Soho on minimum wages!
Thankfully I chose the runner job and a year later I was a freelance avid editor from 1998 until the present day

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
After working at Fusion Post in Soho, I started out editing for an action sports marketing company in London (SSM Freesports) working on location all over the world promoting athletes and brands in snowboarding, skateboarding, mountain biking and more
My next position was with the BBC after a personal referral where I worked in the education department. We also made documentaries one of which won a Bafta award in 2001
Next I worked on documentaries and lifestyle shows about The Williams Tennis family, The Beckhams and worked with some great mentors
I always would become hyper focused and obsess over the subject matter for each project giving 100% to each edit
Appreciating you don’t get many chances I definitely made the most of each opportunity always trying to provide the highest level of excellence possible, especially once I moved from London To Los Angleles California.
I worked with world of wonder for a couple of years on reality tv, then new wave for three years making behind the scenes content for all the major studio releases,Bourne movies, Fast and Furious etc
I worked for Disney making an award winning series about the science of imagineering before returning to documentary for the Green Mile, Formula One and The Beatles Eight Days a Week for Ron Howard.
For the last six years I have been marketing editor at Illumination entertainment making custom content for seven movie releases and becoming fluent in minionese!

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
In the begining of my film career I was working in London on film sets for deferred payment. Also on student and indie films for free to get experience. The big turning point was when I decided my work and time were worth more and stopped do freebies and favours and asked for a reasonable pay.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
After months sometimes years of long hours and dedication when you finally get to see the whole show or film air on tv or in the movie theater even if the piece is only 30seconds long there is a tremendous sense of satisfaction!
