We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jake Blucker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jake below.
Jake, appreciate you joining us today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
For photography it was a matter of time. I took the first year or 2 to learn the ins and outs of photography and eventually landed my first gig as a wedding for a cousin. She had put a lot of trust into a very new photographer but it all worked out well.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started photography back in late 2015. It all started with my iPhone. I’ve been gifted with a creative mind and that allowed me to put it to work. It took me a couple months to buy my first DSLR camera. I bought a Canon Rebel T5i. Used it for a year to capture and start to building a brand. Shortly after, I bought my first Full frame, a Canon 6D. I used it for almost 5 years, taking it all over the country capturing the Mountains of Wyoming to the Golden Gate Bridge to the Empire State Building. Over the years I put a lot of mileage on that bad boy. I ventured out to cave into the mirrorless family by picking up a Canon R6, my current camera. With this one, it has allowed me to open up a new world of creativity through videography. Although still learning how to do it, I’ve been able to do work for Upward Basketball, the Cincinnati Reds, and various wedding video clients. I enjoy “working” for the team I grew up dreaming to play for. I love sharing my content with the Reds and allowing them to post it on their social media outlets.
Let’s move on to buying businesses – can you talk to us about your experience with business acquisitions?
I bought a painting company at the beginning of 2022. I had previously worked for a good friend of mine for 3 years prior to acquiring it. He relocated to Florida so it granted me a life-long career opportunity. I couldn’t deny taking a risk to take over operations and start making more money than I ever dreamed of especially only having a high school diploma. Sticking to the grind of a job and hard work can lead to financial success. You just have to stick to what you love and keep on improving day by day.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I met the original owner of my company through photography actually. We had been photography friends for 4 years prior to me starting to work for him. He asked me if I wanted to learn how to paint and I thought it’d be a great idea to learn a trade since I didn’t have a college degree.
