We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jaime Love a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaime , thanks for joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I find joy in being a business owner, despite the inevitable challenges it brings. The ability to make decisions and work alongside incredible staff that contributes to the success of my business is immensely rewarding. Occasionally, I yearn for the simplicity of turning a key at the end of the night and enjoying uninterrupted vacations; however, this remains the only downside
Jaime , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I previously owned a production company, coordinating photo shoots for clients, small commercial projects, and music videos. Talent for these projects often came from the same agency. One day, they approached me with an offer for an agent position. Initially, I declined the job, but after persistent encouragement over six months, I eventually accepted. That decision was made 18 years ago, and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying my role as an agent ever since. Two years ago this month, I mustered the courage and self-belief to launch my own agency after co-owning an agency for 7 years. Looking back, I’m not only proud but grateful, as these past two years have been the most fulfilling of my career as an agent. We’ve achieved remarkable success, opened doors to casting opportunities previously out of reach, and, in my opinion, assembled the best talent in LA.”
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I was agenting for over 7 years and took a break from the industry. At the time I was working at an agency that was one of the best boutique agencies in the city however there were so many finical issues with the owner paying talent. I really had moral issues with how the business being run, that I decided to withdraw myself from it and went back to production. I had an amazing opportunity land in lap that couldn’t have come at the more perfect time. I took it with open arms and had the most amazing time working with a few of the top celebrities at the time. I really enjoyed going back to my creative roots. A year having some of the best experiences, my heart drew me back to agenting and that is where I went. Soon after I co-opened an agency and 7 years later I now am the sole owner of Love Talent.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Funding my first co-owned agency we were lucky enough to have family support. Thankfully opening an agency doesn’t come with a huge overhead and at the time there were only two agents. Opening my own agency I had profit saved and was able to take that profit and hire staff, and fund the company. So I have been pretty fortunate financially with the beginning stages.
