We recently connected with Jacob Maicol and have shared our conversation below.
Jacob, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
All of us in the band have been playing music for the majority of our lives. It has always been a major part of our lives, but sometimes it takes a collective entity to be able to express it in the way that you’ve wanted to. I personally have been doing music since I was around 6, and always knew it was wanted to do in life, but I was never able to pursue it in the way that I’d always wanted to until Dirty Rivals.
Jacob, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We are Dirty Rivals, a high-energy alternative rock band from South Florida. We consist of myself, Steven Salguero on drums, and Nelson Brockwell on guitar. We met for the first time in 2020; Steven and I had just gotten out of prior bands, and had talked about forming a new project. We met up and found Nelson on a musician app, and the rest was history. Shortly after our formation, Covid hit, which allowed us to take time to ourselves and write before officially announcing as a band in 2021. We are very unique in the sense that we all bring our own musical backgrounds to the group… the blend of alternative/hard rock instrumentals with modern and pop sensibilities is what definite our sound.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It definitely has to be when our music resonates with other people. I think that is what keeps any artist going, and seeing that really inspires us to work twice as hard.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think society today is very accepting towards artists trying to put their craft to life. The best thing to do to support artists is to go out to shows, buy merch, download music, etc. It may not seem like much, but artists and musicians rely extremely heavily on this.
