We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Isamar Rivera a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Isamar, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Something I consider a risk is putting yourself out there. Putting your work, ideas, creation, and talents out to the public. I consider myself a creator . I create different things and can’t define myself with one category. I love to paint, write, share my experiences, make hair tutorials, cooking tutorials the list goes on. One day while I was looking for a remedy that my family has used since I can remember, I could not find the remedy on google. So I researched some other unique remedies I knew and I could not seem to find them on google . I realized a lot of the remedies that are used in Dominican Republic (which is where I’m from ) aren’t on google. Really a lot of Caribbean remedies are just shared by word of mouth. So I thought of the idea that I could put all the remedies I knew into a book and share them with the world. These remedies have been passed down from generations in my family and throughout the Dominican Republic. Now how is that a risk? Well I had never wrote a book before, I didn’t know how long it would take , I didn’t know if the books would even sale or if anyone would care to read it. But I knew if I’m on google looking up remedies ,I’m sure someone else out there is too. So I wrote the book. It’s such a simple book but to me reminds me to take a risk because blessings can come from your risk. Since the day I’ve published the book I have sold multiple copies every single month! Who’s buying my book? I don’t even know but I’m so grateful that I could share remedies that made my childhood and that I believe work. However, always seek advice of your primary care provider before you take my word. Or you can take a risk and try out the remedies . See what I did there?
Isamar, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m just a regular girl, just trying to find my purpose. I have a love for so many different things. But since we’re talking about my book. We can talk about the belief that you can heal your body with the herbs God out here on earth. Not only do I know botanical healing methods but also pharmaceutical. I work as a Registered Nurse in a magnet hospital. So I’m educated on pharmaceutical treatments as well. I think there’s benefit to both methods but it’s always good to expand your knowledge in different forms of healing the body. Like Ayurveda for example, has been used as an alternative medicine system. What sets me apart from others? Well We’re all created uniquely, so me just being myself sets me apart.I’m most proud of doing new things and showing that talents aren’t limited. Interests aren’t limited. Spend your time experiencing new things.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
When It comes to herbalism or studying the body and how herbs affect it , I would say Dr.Sebi is someone who has impacted my way of thinking. It just goes to show the impact you can have on people by just sharing. Sharing experiences, stories, and knowledge. May he Rest In Peace and continue offering insight to people who haven’t heard of him. There’s things we can learn and add to our lives from one another.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I’m not really into marketing . But I would say just always remember every customer is important. Sharing with one person what you can offer , can lead to so many other people knowing. So don’t be shy to share your talents with anyone.
