We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Iesha McCants-Butler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Iesha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I began Business Women In Detroit Facebook group in Jan. of 2021 I wanted to create a safe space for women like myself who are mothers wives sisters grandmothers aunts and business women because we all wear many hats. We all can relate with each other on many different things in life that’s going on and on a daily basis. I wanted to be the vessel to connect and bring ladies together to help each other be of support and possibly collaborate and build together. My mission was to be able to be the connector to many who may need uplifting who may need to be able to feel like they are apart of women working and building together. I believe that we all can grow together and we all can do so much more together as well and that’s what Business Women In Detroit is all about it started with just me and I had no clue how I would do it or go about building it what to expect from it because it was all new for me but sometimes god puts us in a situation that he sees fit for us so I just let him guide me as I go I am learning a lot from the business queens in the group and more about myself and building my brand as I go everyday. I’m understanding that growth doesn’t come easy and neither does change its all about hard work and what you put into it that determines the outcome. I am proud to have some amazing ladies in the group who teach me a lot as well and I’m appreciative of them and we are all connecting and networking together.

Iesha , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
2021 around August I started wanting to experience with doing nails through the pandemic. I had never did nails before though I have always wore them I started watching different videos and I spent so much money buying different things for me to practice nails so that I could just teach myself as I went along. After a few months a close friend of mine Toni Porter said to me go to school so that you can have the paperwork behind your work as well if your really serious about doing nails. Honestly at 38 at first I was like I don’t have time for that I have a family I work full time where would I fit in school full time? I pondered on it for awhile but it made all the sense in the world to get some certification. I prayed on it and made the decision that I’m gonna do it and see it through until the end so I signed up for school in October and I recently graduated nail school in June of 2022. It was a hard challenge going straight to school after work dealing with life during covid having a family but I stayed determined I even caught COVID right before it was time for me to graduate but I wasn’t gonna let that stop me. I have always follows through and this time wasn’t going to be any different im proud of myself because it takes a lot to go back to school after being out so long but it doesn’t matter about age we can do anything we want to do if we just trust in god and believe in ourselves the rest will work out.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I didn’t know much about marketing and promoting because everything with my group Business Women In Detroit was new for me from how do I get ppl to join and how to build it and me creating my nail business Sassymomma Nails was new for me. I just started sharing sharing sharing and promoting my businesses everywhere from Fb to IG to TIK Tok all the platforms I’m on so that people could see what I was doing they would see me promoting and sharing others as well and I just keep the same flow I share I promote I make videos or reels so that I can reach bigger audiences outside of family and friends. Supporting others always shows great leadership and I always been a leader but I believe no one is going to show up and show out for you like you so put your all into you and anything your serious about doing.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Managing a team is difficult you must have the right circle of people to lean on to be able to talk to cry vent and they will support you in your ups and downs. Team is a strong word because it takes everyone to be on the same page so that things fall in place and are in order and no one is blind or left out of the loop so there’s no problems to arise between the parties. High morale is everything for me because you have to be able to give your work your all and have a positive attitude doing it even when you don’t want to I feel like what you can put into someone else’s business you can put into your own and push as hard as you can for self. Build the right team and the mission can be completed.
