We recently connected with Austin McMains and have shared our conversation below.
Austin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I have this ridiculously talented friend @claramcgowan who has the most ethereal poems you’ve ever read. If you’ve never heard of her you have to check out her stuff. While on music video set, we were talking about fusing our creative passions (her poetry & my photography) into one project and she told me she had an entire manuscript already written for an unpublished poetry book from 2018. She gave me access to it and the rest was history! I’m excited for people to finally read it, the book comes out November 4th of this year and is called “THIS IS ALL I HAVE TO GIVE YOU”. This is the link to the book: the link to the book: https://a.co/d/b1IaFgq
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an actor and photographer from Gilbert, Arizona! I have a degree in acting from the University of Northern Colorado, though I don’t exactly wear that on my sleeve. Acting is and always will be my passion but photo/video production is what has been paying my bills for a bit. Though I am grateful to have monetized off of something creative, I think the money sort of takes the excitement out of the craft.
The southeastern film industry has been a learning curve coming from Los Angeles, but in recent weeks I have met some of the most stellar actors I have ever worked with. I just signed with an amazing talent agent out here and I am finally getting into classes at The 4th Wall Acting Studio. I feel like I’m just using this Canvas Rebel interview to brag someone shut me up please. Seriously.
Anyway, my life is perfect.
I think I’m most proud of the longterm connections I’ve made when working on sets or on stage. It’s mind-boggling to me the connections you make when working with creatives that have similar passions as you, though I have found the humor to be the crystal ball into who I will surround myself with. I believe similar streams of consciousness and my ardor for acting is the reason I have attracted my best friends. These people have changed my life and are creatives that everyone needs to be watching: Jason LoCricchio, Slake Dransky, Timothy Oakes & Clara McGowan.
Seriously, someone shut me up.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Nothing drives me more than how I view myself. I always have a project on the back burner because for some reason I need to be a productive person all the time. This is my thought process: My ultimate goal is to turn my acting career into a full-time job and my sole source of income, so I have to put in the hours of a 9-5 every day. I have to act as if I already have what I want.
Ever since I recently restarted putting my attention into my auditions and connections, things have fallen into place for me in my acting career like booking several gigs and getting an agent. Similarly, when I started INTENTIONALLY shooting or editing 5 days a week, I began getting paid to shoot and edit 5 days a week.
Simple in theory and simple in execution.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Someone gaining something positive from it.
or
Someone wanting you to talk about your work on a cool platform like CanvasRebel Magazine.
Thanks again!!!
