We recently connected with Howard W. Grant, Phd and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Howard W., thanks for joining us today. One of the most important things small businesses can do, in our view, is to serve underserved communities that are ignored by giant corporations who often are just creating mass-market, one-size-fits-all solutions. Talk to us about how you serve an underserved community.
Absolutely, the Fulton Atlanta Community Action Authority (FACAA) serves some of the most underserved communities in Fulton County, Georgia, where systemic barriers have long hindered opportunities for upward mobility. These communities face interwoven challenges, including high unemployment, limited access to education, and a lack of affordable housing.
One story that exemplifies this is a young single mother, Maria (name changed for privacy), who came to FACAA seeking help. Living in a neighborhood with limited resources, Maria faced daunting barriers: she lacked a high school diploma, had no reliable transportation, and struggled to provide basic needs for her children. Despite her drive, the odds were stacked against her.
FACAA provided a lifeline. Through our GED program, Maria earned her high school equivalency, which opened doors to higher-paying jobs. She also participated in our financial literacy workshops, learning to budget effectively and establish savings. To address her transportation challenge, we connected her with local partners offering discounted public transit passes.
Today, Maria is employed full-time, pursuing a career in construction. Her journey highlights the importance of wraparound services that not only address immediate needs but also empower residents to achieve lasting stability.
Communities like Maria’s matter because they represent untapped potential. FACAA’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty by offering accessible resources, restoring hope, and equipping individuals with the tools to build brighter futures. By doing so, we contribute to a more equitable and thriving Fulton County.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am privileged to serve as the President and CEO of the Fulton Atlanta Community Action Authority (FACAA), a 31-year-old agency dedicated to alleviating poverty and empowering residents of Fulton County, Georgia. My journey into community and social service was shaped by both personal experiences and a deep commitment to creating meaningful change. Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, I witnessed firsthand the power of community, and the challenges underserved populations face. This inspired a career focused on equity, advocacy, and transformation.
FACAA is more than an organization—it’s a lifeline for individuals and families striving for self-sufficiency. We offer wraparound services such as GED programs, computer literacy training, and financial literacy workshops. These programs address not just immediate needs but also the root causes of poverty, empowering residents to achieve long-term stability. Whether it’s helping someone earn their diploma, gain essential digital skills, or navigate budgeting and savings, we are committed to equipping our clients with tools for success.
What sets FACAA apart is our holistic approach. We recognize that poverty is multifaceted, so we tackle it with integrated solutions tailored to the unique needs of each individual we serve. We also emphasize reintroducing ourselves to the community as a trusted resource, ensuring that no one feels isolated or without options.
I’m most proud of the lives we’ve touched and the transformations we’ve fostered. For me, success isn’t measured by numbers alone but by stories of resilience and hope—like the single mother who went from struggling to thriving or the young man who turned his life around through our job readiness program.
For anyone engaging with FACAA, I want them to know that we are here to uplift, empower, and stand alongside them as they overcome challenges. Our mission is rooted in compassion, innovation, equity and a steadfast belief that every individual deserves the opportunity to succeed. Together, we’re building a stronger, more inclusive community for all.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Several books and resources have significantly shaped my management and entrepreneurial philosophy, offering insights into leadership, resilience, and community impact. One book that stands out is “The Servant as Leader” by Robert K. Greenleaf. This book introduced me to the concept of servant leadership, emphasizing that the best leaders prioritize the needs of their team and community. It reinforced my belief that effective leadership is rooted in empathy, listening, and fostering growth in others.
Another impactful read is “Good to Great” by Jim Collins, which explores how organizations can transition from mediocrity to excellence. The principles of disciplined people, disciplined thought, and disciplined action have deeply influenced my approach to transforming the Fulton Atlanta Community Action Authority. It reminded me that sustainable success comes from aligning vision with measurable action and empowering the right people.
I’ve also drawn inspiration from Simon Sinek’s “Start with Why” and his TED Talk on the same topic. Understanding the “why” behind FACAA’s mission has helped me articulate our purpose more clearly and inspire our team and stakeholders. It underscores that people are motivated not just by what we do but by why we do it.
Additionally, essays like Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” remind me of the importance of perseverance, justice, and the interconnectedness of all communities. These values guide my decision-making and commitment to equity.
These resources have shaped my leadership philosophy: one focused on service, strategic vision, and unwavering dedication to creating meaningful impact.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele at the Fulton Atlanta Community Action Authority (FACAA) has been building strong, authentic relationships with the community while leveraging targeted outreach efforts and strategic partnerships. Here’s a breakdown of the key strategies:
Community-Centered Outreach: We’ve made it a priority to reintroduce FACAA to the community and position ourselves as a trusted resource. By hosting community events, resource fairs, and workshops, we’ve increased visibility and engagement with residents. These events provide opportunities to showcase the services we offer, answer questions, and establish connections. Word of mouth has been a powerful driver for growth, as satisfied clients share their positive experiences with friends, family, and neighbors.
Strategic Partnerships: Partnering with local businesses, government agencies, schools, and other nonprofits has significantly expanded our reach. These partnerships allow us to tap into networks we might not have otherwise had access to. For example, by collaborating with local employers, we’ve been able to connect job seekers to new opportunities, which in turn drives more individuals to seek our services for additional support. These collaborations also help us stay aligned with community needs and ensure that we’re offering the most relevant and up-to-date programs.
Targeted Digital Marketing and Social Media: We’ve increased our presence online through digital marketing and social media platforms. Social media has allowed us to share success stories, promote upcoming events, and provide educational resources, all while fostering engagement with our followers. These digital channels have proven especially effective in reaching younger, tech-savvy populations who may not be as connected through traditional forms of outreach.
Tailored Services to Community Needs: By continuously evaluating and adapting our programs based on feedback and data, we ensure that we are offering services that meet the evolving needs of the community. When people see that our services are tailored to address their unique challenges—whether it’s job training, financial literacy, or educational support—they are more likely to engage with us and refer others.
Client-Centered Approach: We focus on building trust with every individual we serve by providing personalized care. When clients feel heard, respected, and supported, they become repeat users of our services and advocates for FACAA. This personal connection often leads to organic growth, as individuals return for additional services or recommend us to others.
These strategies, combined with a commitment to delivering impactful, life-changing services, have been instrumental in growing our clientele and establishing FACAA as a critical community resource. The key to our success has been staying adaptable, being responsive to community needs, and fostering strong relationships built on trust and accountability.
