We were lucky to catch up with Heather LaRose recently and have shared our conversation below.
Heather, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I have always been a little creative theater kid. I remember in first grade we were asked to write poems and I decided to write a song and I asked my teacher., Ms Odell if I could perform it in front of the class. I think it was always clear to my parents that I was an artsy girl not a sports girl. They did their best to try to sign me up for anything that I was interested in, but what ended up sticking was church choir, school plays and eventually I attended a music high school. I also did tennis but that was just for the cute outfits.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a songwriter, I think one of the things that can make you stand out. The most is an understanding of yourself. I was one of the youngest people to win a Songwriter Hall of Fame award, and I think that’s because I’ve just had such a clear understanding of who I am since I could ever remember. I’m nearly 6 feet tall and have never shined away from having a big personality, big a heart, or a big mouth, it’s all to scale really.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love connecting with fans and finding out what my music means to them. I truly believe what makes the song something timeless it taps into primal basic human emotions that we all feel yet able to draw on personal details, painting a picture of how it feels specific to you. My favorite things are when I receive fan letters, friendship, bracelets, little trinkets that remind the fans of my songs in my PO Box. I recently just got some friendship bracelets from one of my fans named Bella and I wore my friendship bracelet from her along with my Coachella Artist and after party VIP bracelets and the friendship bracelet was what really felt the most special.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I was in college right after I booked one of my first big tours, my boyfriend passed away from brain cancer. I immediately flew back to New York to attend his wake and funeral, I kind of closed myself off emotionally to make it through the tour but the second I got back, it all hit my system like the most disgusting shock wave and I was bedridden depressed for nearly 6 months. The healing process for me is something that I’m constantly working on that is very heavy-handed in the lyrics I write. Even now years later, themes of death pop their way in to my songwriting sessions. But I try to always remember how healing is cyclical and to have grace with yourself and that’s how you can write from a place of emotional honesty.
