We were lucky to catch up with Heath Biller recently and have shared our conversation below.
Heath, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to start your own firm or do you wish you had started sooner?
I definitely wish I had started sooner. I spent over ten years working in healthcare, but toward the end, I realized my interests had shifted; I found myself constantly reading books and articles about finance rather than keeping up with healthcare journals. When a coworker introduced me to a family friend who had started his own financial advising firm, it was the spark I needed to finally make the career switch at the end of 2021.
In healthcare, the lack of control over my time was taxing. I worked 12-hour days, struggled to get vacation time approved due to short-staffing, and was required to work every third weekend and half of the major holidays. This significantly impacted the time I was able to spend with my family and friends. While I still work many hours building my own advising practice, I now have the flexibility to schedule my work around my life priorities.
If I had started any later, I believe I would have reached a point of total burnout. Waiting would have simply prolonged the time it took to feel fulfilled and enjoy my work again. Switching careers has not only increased my happiness but has given me a sense of autonomy that I simply didn’t have before.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Today, through Fiduciary Financial Advisors, I provide comprehensive financial and tax planning for physicians, APPs, and nurses. My goal is to use proactive planning to support financial health just as clinicians use early intervention to improve patient outcomes.
I use forward-looking technology for my practice, including Altruist as a custodian, RightCapital for financial planning, and Vanguard for evidence-based portfolios. This allows me to help create a personalized roadmap that takes the guesswork and emotion out of my clients’ financial futures.
What sets my practice apart is my role as a fee-only fiduciary. This means I accept no commissions and am paid solely by my clients, to help put their interests first. I specialize in solving complex problems for busy healthcare professionals, from goal-based planning to tax-efficient strategies. My mission is to ensure every piece of their financial life fits together like a puzzle, helping clients be wise and efficient with their money so they can reclaim their time.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think what helped build my reputation was a willingness to put myself out there, well outside of my comfort zone. Whether it’s doing interviews like this, writing blog posts, or sharing financial topics on social media, I’ve made it a priority to be visible.
Writing does not come easily to me, but I am driven by the fact that there is so much misinformation surrounding personal finance. I wanted to serve as a reliable resource for healthcare professionals who want to thrive financially. By providing better, more accurate, and evidence-based information, I can help my peers take the guesswork and emotion out of their financial lives.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Referrals have consistently been my best source of new clients. I strive to provide high-quality, comprehensive planning at a transparent price, and while that approach takes time to build, it is incredibly rewarding.
I’ve learned that while not everyone thinks to provide a referral, many are happy to do so when they realize I am open to helping their colleagues, families, and friends. Sometimes, clients just need a simple invitation to refer. It’s a great feeling when a clinician I’ve helped to organize their finances and build a personalized plan wants to help a friend or coworker achieve that same peace of mind.
