We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Hagit Segal. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Hagit below.
Hi Hagit, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
As a child who was a good student and conformed to the traditional education system, I lost my original thinking and imagination to do well and fit in with the system. It took me over 20 years after I graduated high school to rediscover my creativity.
Teachers, educators, and parents should trust children and let them lead their educational journey. Instead of telling children what to think and what to learn, we should allow them to think for themselves, explore ideas, make mistakes, and learn from them.
We must eliminate tests and grades because they add unnecessary stress, reduce motivation, and ruin the love of learning. Also, not all children at a certain age need to know and master the same concepts and skills. Every child is unique, has distinct strengths, and learns differently. Our job as adults is to facilitate an environment that allows children to explore and follow their interests instead of telling them what they should know.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Love Ur Mistakes reframes failure and imperfections by embracing mistakes as learning opportunities. We view mistakes as stepping stones toward success and self-discovery. At Love Ur Mistakes, individuals find a safe space to share and own their missteps, receiving encouragement and valuable lessons.
We nurture stronger parent-child connections in an empowering environment. We encourage parents and educators to establish a foundation for open communication about small mistakes today so that children will share their big mistakes in the future.
We create enriching content to help parents guide their kids in transforming mistakes into growth opportunities. We work in three main dimensions: kids, academy, and TV.
At Love Ur Mistakes KIDS, we celebrate mistakes as opportunities for learning and growth while nurturing creative thinking and compassion. We empower children to explore their creativity, express themselves freely, and develop resilience through creative activities, animation, literature, and music.
At Love UR Mistakes Academy, we embrace mistakes through educational activities to empower individuals of all ages to learn and develop a growth mindset. We conduct workshops, webinars, courses, expert interviews, and more.
At Love Ur Mistakes TV, we welcome mistakes as a natural part of life. We offer thought-provoking content that sparks conversations and inspires positive change. We produce diverse videos featuring expert interviews, animated videos for children, and interactive activities.
We will soon launch the Love Ur Mistakes Club, inviting people to share their mistakes and failures in a safe space to cultivate a connection and a sense of belonging. Members can access exclusive content, tailored activities, and special events to nurture resilience, creativity, and a growth mindset.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I have been a perfectionist for as long as I can remember. It has made my life difficult and stressful, but I always thought it was worth it.
Being a perfectionist took a significant mental and emotional toll on me. I used to be very uptight, task-oriented, constantly stressed and didn’t know how to relax and have fun. Instead of celebrating my accomplishments, I would worry that people around me would realize I was not as impressive as they thought, so I kept pushing myself to work harder. I was a perfectionist because I wanted to distract myself from feeling unworthy.
When I was 39, I took an Art Journaling class that started my journey of letting go of perfectionism. First, we had to create our artwork inside journals so that others would see it only if we chose to share it. It was a liberating experience, realizing that I could make art for myself and not for other people’s approval.
Second, the teacher clarified that our goal is to create art as a form of self-expression, not to make beautiful artwork to display! This was shocking to me, as it had never occurred to me up until that point that art doesn’t have to be attractive or perfect. Art was a way to play, create, and express myself, all the things I had never allowed myself to do before.
It was initially difficult to accept the concept of embracing imperfection as a part of the creative process. I still struggle with this idea but have learned to enjoy the process and use art as a relaxing and healing space.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I have a Master’s degree in Business Administration, yet running a business does not come naturally to me. Although I know what and how to run a business, my brain always goes to the creative part of producing content, products, and services. I strive to add value and provide people with a “wow factor” experience. Often, I drag the essential administrative work that comes with running a successful business.
Of all the business books I have ever read, my favorite is “Start Something That Matters” by Blake Mycoskie. In his book, Blake shares his story of founding TOMS, the successful shoe company that genuinely does good in the world.
Oprah is another inspiring business ideal for me. In one of her famous quotes, she says, “The reason I’ve been able to be so financially successful is my focus has never, ever, for one minute been money.” Oprah has taught me that true success comes from our intention to serve others.
Love Ur Mistake has much room to grow as a business, and my focus will always be the value I bring to people’s lives through my work.
