We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gracie Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Gracie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
The trick I learned early on was getting to know my audience to figure out what sells the best and fastest. Certain things on my blog would just never move but my Mary Ruth posts, for instance, get the most views and sales! If you use my code MROFORGRACIE on amazon or their website you save 20%! https://bit.ly/3DGFaiK
I also make my posts tie into whatever season or holiday is happening at the time. Right now, I am utilizing shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day and plastic eggs for Easter.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I fell in love with blogging during college while i earned a BA in Communications/ Public Relations/Interegrated Media. I made a restaurant blog for college students and eventually made another blog containing my own recipes.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Post what you love, not just what you think people want to see. I am constantly filming my cats and Birdie for cute little clips and they always get the most views. If you are putting out content that you like, people can tell. They can also tell if you are not that into it.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I never got into the whole daily vlog/shopping vlogs when i first started blogging but i realized last year that it’s where most of the views are located. I never thought of my daily trips to Target or my cat supply haul from Pets Mart or my Costco haul would interested anyone but they did. I started filming my cats doing their cat things and my audience loved it.
