We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gary Trudell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gary below.
Gary, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
We are part of an industry that is predominantly petrochemical based. This type of foam typically is what off gases and causes allergies, heat issues, and support issues.
What sets us apart is we still handcraft mattresses using American Steel and natural cotton that is healthier, sleeps cooler, and lasts longer. We also make them double sided for greater support and longevity.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My family has been doing this for 35 years and we now have 8 locations in Southern California. Our factory is near Disneyland and we still manufacture and source raw materials locally which provides a higher quality product.
What I think sets us apart from others is our fitting process. We are fortunate that we have the opportunity to positively affect people’s heath and wellness as sleep is when the body has time to heal and recover.
We understand that one mattress does not fit all and during our fitting process, we are able to see people’s predominant sleeping positions, body type, any injuries or ailments, and help find them a mattress that works best for them.
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
Yes we manufacture our own mattresses. Being 1/10 kids, our father made us all find work early on in our lives.
One of my eldest brothers at age 15 started working at a local mattress factory near the home where we grew up. There he learned the traditional craftsman style of hand making mattresses.
As things started to evolve and people started importing goods and getting rid of the traditional equipment, my brother saw an opportunity.
He acquired the traditional equipment they were no longer using and brought them to our garage at our home. We started to make mattresses in our garage the traditional way, with the first mattress we did for our Aunt who had back and medical issues. That is how we got our start and we are still doing this 35+ years later.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The quality service we provide. As a family business, we care for every person that walks into one of our stores and want to positively affect their sleep, wellness, and overall quality of life.
