We were lucky to catch up with Gary Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Gary thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
For almost 30 years Talent Dynamics has coached talent in local and network tv news, along with executive coaching. With the proliferation of video in so many industries as a marketing tool, more and more people are doing on camera work for their company, with very little training or direction. Look at real estate, agents are doing on camera work for their listings using their cell phones and may times shooting the video themselves, some of it is great! But most of it is just not good, people need to consider this video lives forever and if it is not good what does it do to your brand? Consider this, The National Association of Realtors in the USA conducted a survey that revealed amazing results- videos embedded on your website can result in a whopping 157% more organic search results, and listings with videos get 403% more inquiries! The best person to sell your listing is you! We believe our content creation training with our on-camera coaching can help professionals in any industry be more comfortable on camera.

Gary, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Talent Dynamics has been around almost 30 years focusing on the broadcast news industry. We handle placement in tv news and coaching of on-air talent. Recently, we have found other industries have relied on our coaching team to help them in the age of zoom, webcams and social media marketing. We can help executives, sales people, investment advisors who find themselves on camera delivering important information become more comfortable with their webcam, cell phone camera, whatever device they are using to create content for their business. As for myself, I have been in the TV news business for over 30 years. I started as a producer and worked my way up to executive leadership teams of two broadcast groups. In June 2022, my business partner and friend, Patrick McCreery and I purchased Talent Dynamics, our goal is evovle this great brand and position it in the media space and other industries as a leader in content creation training.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
In Television, every year at budget time we would look at expenses and revenue and factor revenue growth. We applied that thought to our new business in the first year. We quickly realized budgeting revenue growth in connection with expense growth is hard with a small business. Instead I have learned to factor the expense number first and then back into the revenue. If the revenue is less than the expenses you have to make some choices.

Let’s move on to buying businesses – can you talk to us about your experience with business acquisitions?
We purchased Talent Dynamics in 2022. We purchased it because my business partner and I both were clients of the company. We believed in it and saw a great resource that could evolve as our main industry has evolved. We obtained a small business association loan for the purchase. The SBA process is arduous process, all of which we did without a business advisor helping us on the front end. The lessons learned were many, mostly all the documentation you would need, the hoops you have to jump through, but going through that process we felt even better about our purchase as we saw the potential of the business by looking at all the trends.
