We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Frankie Midnight a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Frankie, appreciate you joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
It’s been a blessing to do what I love for a living but it hasn’t been all roses. Everyday is a constant hustle and the route of an actor/ recording artist is a commissioned based job. If I don’t book, I don’t work. The only consistency I’ve had last year that has helped me through my career was keeping a strong relationship with God through prayer and sacrifice as well as exercising a strong focus and determination. Also, keeping a tight lip on what I do eliminates doubt and negativity from others which makes it easier for me to achieve my goals and show results.

Frankie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was born and raised in Miami Gardens, Dade county. I’ve been acting since the age of 11 , studying great actors such as Sydney Poitier, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Clarence Williams III. In 2023, I became a full time actor with over 5 upcoming film projects to be released in 2024. At age of 13, I began playing guitar and shortly after, writing and recording my original songs. I recently released my 2024 EP titled, “Fervent”, with 6 new songs. The word, “Fervent” means to have or display a passion intensely.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Society can support artists directly which would restore value and empowerment in the artists who are the creators of the art. Within the professional space, many artists have to depend on a middle man who, most times, take advantage of the artists. Society need to bridge the gap directly to the artists and put the control back into the artist’s hands.
Have you ever had to pivot?
For many years, I’ve primarily pursued music as a way to make a living but was unable to sustain my lifestyle from music alone. Back in 2022, I made the conscious decision to put music on the shelf and pursue another creative route which brought me back to my first love, acting. I started acting again and things began to stabilize in my life. Acting is fun, but its a job with a lot of demanding work and I dont mind putting in the work within this area but music is too personal to me. I didn’t want to be an industry artist, compromising my creativity for a safe sound. Now, i am a full-time actor, but I’ve also found a way to professionally return to making music, through sync licensing; full circle. I think we need to give ourselves grace to fail and acceptance to quit some things to pursue other areas. Once I decided to professionally quit music, I thrived in another area of my artistry which have paved the way for me to return to making music and sustain my living. Only God knows what the future holds and I may pursue another professional area later on in life but for the time being, im living my dream and I have to give praise to God for being my rock as well as myself for staying the course of my goals.
