We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Filemon & Maribel Garcia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Filemon & Maribel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
It all started back in 2017 when my Husband and I decided to quit our 9-5s and break the chain of living paycheck by paycheck. It was always my Husband’s dream to start his own company, he has so much passion for the work of concrete, that it didn’t feel like work anymore but something that he loved doing. We knew it wouldn’t be easy, and that there would be so many bumps on the road. We had no other choice but to strive for success. With 2 kids at home, them going to school, doing after school activities and fulfilling their needs we knew in our heads, they were going to be the main reason why we were going to work so hard 24/7 every single day. When we first launched Lexus Concrete LLC, we had to start from zero. My husband had many clients at his old job working in the field every day, before starting the company, but then realized he was going to have to convince those clients why they should use a brand new company with no established work/vouch history. While my husband was on the field, on the phone, or all over the city, I was in the office handling all the paperwork, making checks, getting permits, trying to be the best wife, and business partner because I knew in my mind that one day this would all pay off. We started off really small when we got on the radar for concrete work, we mostly did Residential driveway pours, sidewalk pours, and ultimately we relied on this work because we were so new we had a reputation to build. Our main goal at Lexus Concrete is to provide the best customer service & give you the results that are beyond your expectations. This was by far the hardest risk we ever had to take in our lives, balancing our business, spending time with our kids, and being there when they need us the most was our priority.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My husband previously worked at another concrete company before starting Lexus Concrete, he would always be on the field every single day pouring concrete, being a finisher and overall always working late nights to provide for us & his family. I was working at a Dentist Clinic as an Assistant, I would work for most of the day, and usually I would stay overtime, to provide for my kids at home. We were ultimately tired of living the same life for so many years. My husband and I decided in 2017 that we were going to start our own company Lexus Concrete LLC. My husband had a strong passion for the work of concrete and he loved every single aspect of it. He knew every single thing about concrete and was well educated about how it worked. He knew he had to pursue his passion, and see where it would take us. I was always super supportive of my Husband and his dreams. This was a lot for both of us, and our family, because we truly didn’t know where we were gonna end up at but we knew had to take that risk. Lexus Concrete specializes in pouring concrete foundations. We do Residential & Commercial, when we first started we did small work, such as driveways, sidewalks, small parking lots but eventually after working so hard for many years, we got to expand and do so much more. We mainly do our work in Houston, Texas but have expanded to many areas such as Dallas, San Antonio, Louisiana and still looking to expand even more. Our main goal will always be to give our customers exceptional service, and extraordinary results.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Our main goal before starting Lexus Concrete LLC was to save up as much as we could while supporting our 2 kids at home, paying our bills, and trying to pay off our car payments on time. It wasn’t easy at first but when we truly decided to commit and prioritize that we needed to have money saved up in order to even start our business. We knew they were gonna be many pop ups, such as acquiring permits, getting licenses and more. When we finally had enough money to start the business we immediately started getting all the paperwork filed, registering as an LLC. Once we finished everything that we needed to proceed with, we applied for a credit line for the business. We were so worried that we weren’t going to get approved, and we knew that this would make it or break it if we didn’t get approved. We put it in gods hands and a few days later we got approved for the credit line. It is important that before starting your business to have funds saved up, good credit because you need to be ready to face any obstacles you will get when starting your business. My husband and I were so happy that we got approved for the credit line, and were ready to begin this new journey after working so hard, and endlessly for many years.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
When we first started Lexus Concrete LLC, we knew we were entering an industry where there would be so much competition. We knew we had to make a difference and stand out more than anyone else on the field. Many other concrete companies only focused on one thing that was making their money and moving on to the next person. That wasn’t our goal at Lexus Concrete. We were to provide the best concrete services to everyone who wanted to work with us. Our goal was to leave a mark with every single client, and always be reasonable with our pricing. We truly just want to help those who are looking to receive the best service and be communicated to every single step of the way. We knew that if we did all these things passionately that our reputation will always be on top of our other competitors. At Lexus Concrete we aren’t only so passionate of our field of work but we enjoy helping our clients with the best services in Houston day to day. With all of these factors being said, we truly believe that is what helped us build our reputation.
