We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Felicia Adderley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Felicia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
If I could go back in time, I would have kicked Posh Parties into high gear sooner. It’s my second major business as an adult and I transitioned from the first one, which was in the medical field to the event industry. I tried to hold onto the other business too long, when I should have made the decision to let it go much sooner. That energy and other resources could have been channeled towards Posh Parties earlier on and I may have been further along today. However, I can’t change the past, so I’m taking it from where it is and moving forward.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I’m Felicia Adderley, Creative Director of Posh Parties. I became curious about the industry in December 2019 when I planned a birthday party for my mother. As it turns out, there was a helium shortage at the time and I started doing some digging. I became intrigued by balloons in particular. Posh Parties has since blown up into a full event decor and rental business. Balloons are still my love. I have also found myself teaching others to do what I have done- start their own successful balloon business through the education arm of the business, The Posh Balloon Academy. We host group classes and one-on-one too. The academy serves a different client than Posh Parties originally set out to. The academy serves aspiring balloon artists that need a local source for quality balloon education. Posh Parties provides a turn-key solution for event decor and rentals. Even full event planning service is available. I’m most proud of myself for starting over, building a new business and rebuilding myself in the process.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
The initial capital for this business actually came from personal funds and grants. I realized that grant funding is a way to catapult a business from its origin to its next level, but without having to wait to generate revenue to have the money needed to build the business.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Social media has been the tool that has helped establish my clientele. There is good brand recognition in the community and consistent posting has helped build credibility.
