Felecia , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
One of the greatest gifts my mother gave me was the belief that anything is possible, no matter the stage of life or the obstacles in the way. Growing up, she would often tell me, “You can be anything you set your mind to,” a lesson I’ve passed down to my own children. But what makes this truly powerful is that she didn’t just say it—she lived it. As a single mother, she worked tirelessly to provide for us, often putting her own dreams on hold. Instead of going to college after high school, she went straight to work to support our family. However, when I graduated and left for college, my mother made the bold decision to apply to college herself. I love sharing the story that we were in college at the same time, and we graduated just one week apart in May of 1995.
My mother’s perseverance and resilience taught me what it truly means to chase your dreams and never give up. Her example instilled in me an unstoppable spirit of determination and belief that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to—and do it well. That mindset of faith and expectation has not only shaped my life but also influenced how I raise my own children. Her determination created a ripple effect of resilience that will continue to impact our family for generations to come.
Felecia , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Felecia Higgs Walker, and I am passionate about helping people transform their lives. As a native Memphian and a proud graduate of Whitehaven High School, class of 1991, I went on to earn both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Tennessee. During my time as a college student, I didn’t have a clear career path or even know what I wanted to do with my education. I just knew that I had a deep desire to help others, though I had no idea how far that desire would take me.
I started my career in social work, where I spent 12 years before transitioning into pharmaceutical and then transportation sales. It was during my time in transportation sales that I realized I needed to earn more money to provide for my family. Starting in an entry-level role, I set my sights on a promotion, but my approach was far from typical. I began preparing for my promotion a full year in advance, documenting my successes and outlining the steps I took to achieve them. I also started networking with department heads and executives two levels above me, seeing them as bridges to my next opportunity rather than being intimidated by their positions.
Before long, I earned my first promotion, and soon afterward, colleagues began seeking my advice. As I helped them navigate their own career paths, I saw the positive impact it had on their lives, and I realized that I could help others beyond my immediate circle. This revelation led me to create a career coaching program, write a book, launch a book tour, become a speaker, and make a few television appearances. I’ve been a guest on several podcasts, partnered with companies to develop their employees, worked with high schools to shape students’ futures, and helped college students prepare for their next steps.
Through my brand, I’ve championed the belief that when an opportunity presents itself, you must show up fully for yourself. You have to show up in a way that not only leaves people wondering how you got there but also inspires them to make meaningful changes in their own lives. I truly believe I’m the best version of myself today, but what excites me most is knowing there’s always room to grow.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my business is incredibly simple: don’t keep your work a secret. Share what you’re doing with the community and the world. Let people see the impact you’re making, how frequently you’re doing it, and the quality of your results. Most importantly, let the success stories of those you serve speak for themselves. I firmly believed that there were countless people and businesses out there in need of my services, but they didn’t know who I was. So, I consistently showcased my work to my network, hoping that they would one day recognize its value and want to integrate my expertise into their professional spaces.
I was also unafraid to compare my approach to others. I had absolute confidence that my real-world, hands-on style of coaching was uniquely suited for the transformative work that needed to be done.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Pivoting can be one of the most frustrating challenges, especially when you’ve invested so much in a path you truly believe in. However, the moment you realize a pivot is necessary is also the moment you recognize that change is inevitable and essential for growth.
When I started my career coaching business, I initially focused on the individual professional. But after being consistently overlooked by individuals, I was forced to rethink my approach. This led me to explore group coaching and partnerships with companies. I began to think from the perspective of corporations and executive leaders. I asked myself, “If I had a team of employees, what kind of mindset would I want them to have?” I imagined how empowering it would feel if my boss actively invested in my development and built me up through opportunities for growth. The answer was clear: I would feel valued, empowered, and heard.
So, I shifted my coaching model to focus more on groups—whether it was students or professionals—tailoring my approach to fit their needs. Once I made that shift, everything changed. I went from impacting a few individuals at a time to transforming the mindsets of entire groups, who then went on to impact others in their networks.
Pivoting can sometimes feel like failure, but if you approach it with the right mindset, your pivot can become your power.
