We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Face The Fence. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Face The Fence below.
Hi Face The Fence, thanks for joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Being in a band is a lot like being a business owner. You have to market yourself and build a fan base all the same. It is definitely not your typical job but we wouldn’t change it for the world. Of course we still go through the thoughts of doubt like “Are we really gonna make it?” or “Is it all worth it?” but we get up and make the choice every single day to keep going. Being a small independent artist especially in a time like this with all the ai “artists” it can be tough. It’s very hard to get your name out there, social media definitely helps, but really getting out into your community and making connections that way can make or break you. We felt by choosing this question we could help other artists who may be suffering with those self doubting thoughts, to remember why you do what you do in the first place. The feeling of making music for all types of people to enjoy and relate to and the joy that brings all of us!

Face The Fence, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We are Face The Fence, a hard rock band from Tampa Florida. We met through a music school that we were all taking individual lessons from. We formed the band at first just for fun but we quickly realized that we wanted to do this for real. We have been active in the local music scene for about two years now. We have a single as well as an EP called “Openers” out on all streaming platforms and are currently working to release our next one on June 27th. We love writing music of all genres and tend to have trouble deciphering what genre as a band we are. Our songs range from ballads to post hardcore/emo music and I think that’s what makes us stand out the most. I think what we are the most proud of is the fact that we are all such good friends. It’s hard to find a group of people that you just “click” with. We all have the same dream, the same humor, and the same drive. We truly just want to make music that anyone anywhere can relate to and find joy in listening to.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
This is not a lesson that we necessarily had to unlearn, but it’s something that everyone in the music industry is exposed to which is the art of competition. It’s very easy to let your competitive nature take control. Everyone is trying to do the exact same thing as you, get gigs, make money, and make it big. It’s important to take a step back and realize how lucky you are that you get to watch your fellow musicians grow.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Originally when we formed we were about 14-15 years old. We formed simply because we all loved similar music and thought it would be fun to work together to play the music we all loved. I think what started the thought of actually trying to do music full time was really when we wrote our first song together. We were so proud of the song and we couldn’t wait to write more. We started to play more shows and eventually worked our way up to headlining some of them. We still have so much more work to do to get to where we are trying to go but it’s amazing to look back and see how far we have come.
