We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Esther Tang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Esther below.
Esther, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
As a seasoned illustrator with five years of experience, I concur that profitability can pose a formidable challenge for individuals in our field, especially during the initial stages of one’s career. The illustration market is saturated with highly talented artists vying for opportunities, underscoring the importance of cultivating a distinctive artistic style to stand out in this competitive landscape. Furthermore, securing the right clients often hinges on a degree of serendipity.
In my personal experience, I have been fortunate to acquire clients through referrals from both peers and previous satisfied clients who have recognized my expertise and chosen to engage my services for projects such as informative illustrations for children’s books or editorial pieces. Establishing a consistent flow of freelance work demands considerable time investment, which can lead to fluctuations in income.
Many of my colleagues opt to maintain full-time employment to ensure a stable income, often venturing into diverse domains that demand additional expertise and involve interdisciplinary work. I have observed illustrator friends who have delved into fields like furniture design and fireworks design, among others. These pursuits necessitate them to step outside their artistic comfort zones and acquire new skills to meet the unique demands of their chosen endeavors, which can be quite challenging.

Esther, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My artistic journey began at a young age when I fell in love with drawing cartoons and illustrations during my primary school days. Drawing gradually became the most significant part of my life, shaping my identity and purpose. With dreams of improving my skills and pursuing a career in the art world, I decided to attend the Illustration program at the School of Visual Arts for college. Over the past five years, I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with Elle, StarChef, and many other individuals and studios. Some of my pieces have even received recognition in platforms like Communication Arts, the ADC Awards, and the Society of Illustrators.
The environment around me has played a significant role in influencing my illustration style. After moving from Shenzhen to the bustling city of New York, I became fascinated with exploring the relationship between modern city living and nature. My work now revolves around capturing the wonders of nature, the complexities of city life, and the pursuit of mental well-being in our fast-paced society. I firmly believe that the heart of illustration draws inspiration from the people and society that surrounds us. I always remind myself to observe keenly and continue learning new ideas and skills.
As an illustrator from the Gen Z generation, I see art as a medium to spread positivity and warmth. My creative drive is not just about enjoying drawing but also about sharing happiness and joy through my art. I draw inspiration from my personal experiences and emotions, infusing each creation with a piece of myself. I’m also open to exploring various topics and themes. Recently, my work has ranged from children’s books to pieces inspired by the natural world and illustrations rooted in architectural history. I relish the chance to delve into different genres and subjects that can have a meaningful impact on my audience.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely! For me, storytelling is at the very core of illustration. Every piece of artwork I create goes beyond mere drawing; it’s about weaving narratives that tap into our creative essence. Through my work, my objective is to tell stories that evoke emotions, be it joy, curiosity, or nostalgia, and connect deeply with the audience, sparking conversations and offering fresh perspectives. Over the past few years, I’ve invited my peers to view my new works and share their thoughts. Their insights help me gain a deeper understanding of my own creations.
Moreover, I hold a profound appreciation for the power of illustration in conveying emotions. I vividly recall the impact of Jimmy Liao’s children’s book, “The Blue Stone,” which illuminated the potential of illustration for me. Art possesses a unique ability to communicate feelings without the need for words, allowing it to forge emotional bonds with people. My aspiration is to harness this power, crafting art that fosters a heartfelt connection with the audience.
Lastly, my passion extends to the pursuit of beauty in all its forms. There’s an inherent desire within me to capture the beauty I perceive in the world through my artwork, whether it manifests in nature, human relationships, or urban landscapes. I aim to share this distinctive vision with others, inspiring a deeper appreciation for the world that surrounds us and serving as a reminder for people to pause, take a moment, and marvel at the everyday wonders that envelop us.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist, in my perspective, lies in the role that art plays as a bridge between my inner world and the external one. It serves as a medium through which I can convey my thoughts to a broader audience. For instance, one of my creations, a zine titled “Long Nose Bamboo Shoot,” unfolds in a fictional plant kingdom, brimming with invented scandals and celebrity gossip. Through this hand-drawn magazine, my aim is to remind people about the dangers of clickbait and misinformation prevalent in the social media landscape. Additionally, the potential of my art to inspire others is immensely fulfilling. I relish the notion that a piece of artwork may kindle a spark within the audience, fueling their own creativity or providing them with a fresh perspective on the world.
Furthermore, I cherish the freedom that comes with being an artist. The canvas grants me the liberty to delve into the boundless realms of my imagination and to express myself authentically. Among my most cherished works is the “Lunar Dinosaur Fantasy World” series, which features a group of dinosaurs living on the moon. Though purely fictional, these pieces allow me to craft a narrative that underscores the idea that imagination knows no bounds—where dinosaurs can dance amid the stars, and the moon becomes their playground. I find great joy in unleashing my imagination to roam freely, exploring endless possibilities within the realm of art.
