We were lucky to catch up with Erika Surbaugh recently and have shared our conversation below.
Erika, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Highline Creations was born out of adventure, creativity and passion. While on a family vacation in Glacier National Park, our family was inspired to do more of what we love, and decided to follow our dream to design, craft and build. Erika, our design guru and star behind the show, along with Kyle, our laser master and MacGyver, decided to bring this dream to reality, and Highline Creations quickly took off. The meaning behind our name comes from our favorite trail we’ve hiked as a family of 4, the Highline Trail. The views on this trail are unlike any other and we think you’ll agree.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
At Highline Creations, we specialize in Custom Gifts and Promotional Products. Laser engraving is our specialty, and we love working with all types of products and mediums. From custom signs, closing gifts, wedding decor, holiday gifts, employee appreciate gifts, bulk orders, and more, we do it all!
We’ve recently started to work with local boutiques to create custom designs and gifts for everyone to love.
We also started to launch some gift boxes and partnered with other local businesses for the items included. So when you purchase a gift box, you are supporting multiple local businesses, and getting to experience a variety of items to try as well.
What sets us apart is how we pride ourselves on perfection, attention to detail, superb communication, and a quick turnaround. We are a small family business, and we want you to feel like family, and that your order is the most important thing to us. When you choose Highline Creations, you will be nothing short of amazed.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Networking! The best client is one that is so happy with your services that they refer you to others and speak highly to everyone they know about you. Majority of our business has been word of mouth and people we have met in our community. There are so many networking opportunities it can be overwhelming to feel like you need to do them all but our best advice is to start small and make a goal. Maybe your goal is to attend 2 networking events a month and start with that. Start to build those relationships and get your name out there.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
We are still working on this one. As a small business owner, not only are you the designer, the maker, the photographer, the website person, but you also run the social media. It can be easy to get burnt out fast trying to accomplish everything, Our social media following is still small but we are working on posting more content to showcase our products. We do better with pictures but “the algorithm” wants videos so that is sometimes a struggle. We follow a lot of other accounts and those that are successful are consistent and post a lot, at least once a day! While we would love to do that as well, we try to balance work and family life still and not get sucked into the constant demand for more.
